Art Prize Chat

Have you been out to wander ArtPrize yet?  Do you have any favorites?  ARe you voting this year?

I went for 7 hours on Friday and still don't have a favorite, or anything that really jumped out at me as a winner.  I couldn't get voting to work on my phone so I'll have to manually enter all the numbers on my desktop.  Last year I didn't vote at all, but I wanted to be a part of things this year even if I don't get to see much more than I have already.

Re: Art Prize Chat

  • I went today. There were SO many people there, I couldn't believe it. We didn't hit too many venues. I'm not going to vote because nothing really stood out to me and I only saw a few of them. I liked a couple, but I think I would need to see more to vote accurately.
  • We went on Sat. and there were SO MANY people. We are going again on Wed. morning to see some more of the outside things. A few of the pieces in DeVos place were very cool. DId anyone see that tile painting on the first floor? I'd like that on my bathroom wall :)
  • I just got back from going tonight with the family. It was awesome to see so many people downtown. I loved the one made of crayons at the JW Marroitt. Inalso liked a lot of the glass artwork and the driftwood sculpture was really cool. I think there may be a GNO on Oct 2. So I may join that for another round.
  • The one on the first floor of DeVos was really neat.  Someone was walking around DeVos (not sure if it was the artist?) and was saying it is in the top 50.
  • I was really impressed by the large pencil drawing at the Art Museum and I also loved the "Where Do You Get Your Ideas" piece at the public museum. We've only spent a few hours looking around so far so I can't wait to see what else is out there.
  • We wandered for a bit this afternoon with the ILs. I really liked the B&W photos of Detroit on the 2nd floor of DeVos Place; being from there originally, they kind of struck a chord with me.

  • We had to go to the County Clerk's office on Thursday, so I've seen the giant red paperclips and the domes made of t-shirts.  Both were interesting, but not vote worthy.

I'd like to see more, but not sure how to pull if off with a 3 month old and I'm not crazy about crowds downtown.

  • We went on Saturday and it was PACKED! I LOVED the crayon one at JWMarriott! That was a project that a bunch of school kids did! So cool!!!! There's also a HUGE drawing (size of Open Water) at the Art Museum on the second floor of a cavalry form years past. Looks like a photo until you get up close and see it's a drawing. Did the whole thing cross-hatch, not shading. Must have taken forever! There's also another neat one in the GRAM called (I think) salt and earth - there's a pile of sand on the floor and the artist used red clay powder to draw a self portrait on the sand. Amazing! It's in a little room there and you have to wait in line, but it goes pretty quickly. I wanted to go see more, but it was so busy and trying to push a stroller around was not easy. Also it was chilly and I was tired. Hopefully we can go down another day. First round of voting is through this Wednesday.

  • The crayons at the Marriott were cool.  Thinking back, I do remember than I liked the NYC subway "photograph" made entirely out of duct tape.  That's at the Women's Club in the basement.

Someone sent me a link today to one about kids with disabilities and looking beyond the surface and at who they really are/how they live their lives.  I need to go find that one.
