...and I've lost it

As I've mentioned we are house sitting at my parents. This morning I was getting ready in my parents bathroom area after I got out of the shower. Well they have one of those terrible set-ups where the mirror at the vanity faces the mirrored closet doors, so you can see your backside in ALL it's glory.

Well mine is ugly & out of control. I know I've gained weight since the wedding, especially recently. I've just let myself go. We don't even have kids and I've let myself become the last priority in our lives/house. This actually makes me wonder how I'll have time for myself after kids, but that's another issue.

I don't know how to make myself a top priority and make sure I'm living a healthy lifestyle. I'm so concerned with everyone else being happy & taken care of.

I just don't even know where to begin anymore. I know one of my problems is that I have a very limited repertoire of healthy recipes. When I think "healthy" I think - grilled chicken, grilled fish, steamed/grilled veggies, brown rice. Yeah I can eat that sometimes, but not every single day. That WILL make me binge on chocolate cake or Mexican.

Lunches are a huge problem for me. I just don't know how to eat a balanced lunch because I don't take the time the night before to make sure I have something healthy to take. Also we're on a serious budget which makes it more difficult to eat a lot of variety because I really have to get the most I can on our weekly food budget.

I just don't know what to do anymore. There doesn't seem to be enough time in the day to do everything.

Guilt free chocolate chip cookies to anyone who made it through that!

If anyone has any ideas or yummy recipes to share I would greatly appreciate it!

  • I am in the SAME exact boat (see warrior diet post).  I hate myself and who I have become.  I wish food did not taste so darned good!!!

  • Sara I am struggling with the same issue.  If you want I will be your buddy and we can e-mail/text each other to make sure we are taking time to eat healthier, work out, and stay mentaly healthy!  I have been trying to find healthy ideas too, but we are on a budget too so I unerstand how you feel.  We have tried starting small like eating less red meat and using less salt/butter in our foods.  Also I have learned that if i give myself a good balance of what i like to eat and what i need to eat.

  • "dieting" or healthy living is all about moderation.  It's really quite simple, although it seems hard.  You don't have to make your new grocery runs only veggies and things you can grill.  You can still have your mexican and chocolate, just eat human sized portions.  I count calories and eat ever 3 hours along with exercise...that is what I was told to do by a trainer friend.  Even my dr. said calories are calories and you could lose weight on a chocolate cookie diet if you knew when to stop.  Small changes, smaller portions, and even smaller plates make a HUGE difference.  You'd be surprised how much 1 cup of something actually is when you put it on a plate.  I use smaller plates to trick the eye unless I'm doing mostly veggies.  Try not to get discouraged, I know how hard it is!

Tammy this is great advice and the main reason that when we moved I got rid of all of our dishes and we areagetting new normal sized ones!  I want us to start eating better protions of food not so much going all healthy all the time.  My biggest issue right now is that I stopped working out during the move and now I am having trouble motivating myself.

  • I know exactly how you feel. This past weekend I stepped on the scale and broke down in tears. I am at my heaviest, and that includes while I was pregnant. Crying

  • I absolutely love Cooking Light (ask nataliejp) and I live off of their recipes.  Try taking a walk at lunch if you can - just 30 minutes.  DH and I cook dinner and make enough for leftovers the next day to avoid eating out.  I have a hard time controlling myself when we go out to eat.

Other websites I would recommend are Hungry Girl and Eat This Not That for food.

If you want to start tracking your intake and exercise you can use dailyburn or sparkpeople.

  • I totally feel ya girl...  I swore I'd never let myself go and I pictured myself being that mom always out and about running circles aroudn the hood with the stroller... turns out I have a high needs baby that needs to be held and won't tolerate one thing for very long...

I was skinny skinny skinny when I first met DH.  I put on 6lbs by our wedding (over the time of 4 years) that I was perfectly ok with - I called it my "perfect" weight.  From the wedding 'till when I got pregnant, I put on another 4 (over the time of 3 months?!)... Now I'm having a hard time getting back to my perfect weight - I'm like 11 lbs away and every day those 11 lbs KILL me.  Every time I put on my jeans, I'm reminded that I still have a bunch to lose before they fit like they used to Crying  I have a wardrobe of beautiful clothes that I can't even stomach to touch most days.

  • Thanks for all the wonderful support ladies! I know it's time for me to stop saying I'm going to do something and just do it. I will definitely be taking all of your suggestions to heart.

For the record, since I met DH in 2008 I have probably gained 20 pounds. TWENTY F*CKING POUNDS of self loathing I get to carry around every day.

True story :)  Mary has shared some of these recipes with me and they have all been really good!

I also agree with everything Tammy said, she is spot on.  Try not to get discouraged and start slow.  Keep your expectations realistic and if you slip up one day come back strong tomorrow.  You can do it, girl!

  • I'm in this same boat....and so depressed about it.  & if I can't eat healthy myself, how am I supposed to be in charge of my baby's diet!?  I am so unmotivated and my H reminds me all the time how out of shape I am.
  • I gained 42 pounds while PG.  I still need to lose 20 of it.  It's pretty depressing.  I don't know why I thought it would just fall off, but it didn't.

My suggestion for lunches: Lean Cuisines or Smart Ones (whatever is on sale that week.)  They are kind of small, but still a good enough meal for lunch and it limits your caloric intake.
