Need help finding a therapist PLEASE!

I have felt for a few years I need to go see a therapist. I haven't spent tons of time searching for one, but the few I have called when ask why I want to be seen I don't feel I have an answer, but yet I think I do. In the past 6 years....

Step-Dad died from Cancer
No longer have much contact with step family
Move, got married, and had a baby
My mother tried to commit suicide 3 times
My brother tried to commit suicide
My mother lost her house, and My dad is on the verge

Is this reason to you? Should I spend more time searching and when they ask why just say because?

Anyone have any recs of places in the south metro with evening and/or weekend hours.

** I might delete this later, I am having a horrible day and REALLY think I would be able to handle days like today with the help of a therapist, but also don't want to be crazy :)

Re: Need help finding a therapist PLEASE!

  • I don't have any recommendations, but I wanted to say that I'm sorry you're going through this, and I don't think you should need to tell them specifically why you want to see someone. If you're dealing with some crap and want to see a therapist, you should. They probably want to know why you want to be seen so they can determine if you should see a psychiatrist, if you need someone who specializes in something, etc.

  • I'm sorry you are going through all of this! It sounds like you would really benefit from processing all of these transitions/changes/emotions. When asked what's bringing you to therapy, you could easily keep it simple and brief with something like "having a hard time with family transitions and losses" or something.

I don't have any specific recommendations for you right now, but I would recommend checking out this website:

    http://www.therapistlocator.net/SearchUS.asp

This will find you marriage and family therapists and you can search by your zipcode and expand to however far you're willing to travel.

Good luck in your search and hopefully you will be able to find some peace. Let me know if you have more questions!

I was just searching through the link provided above and was just looking at this site, I am going to call tomorrow.

  • First of all, I'm so sorry you've gone through so much!

Secondly, I apologize on behalf of all therapists.  They tend to be so single focused in who they see but so *bad* at marketing or dealing with prospective clients.

Thirdly, what do you hope comes out of therapy? Stress relief from dealing with all this madness?  new skills on how to deal with the stress?  Sometimes therapists, who may bill out $125/session, want to ensure you're getting what you want by knowing WHY you're there and WHAT you want.

As it stands (please PM me if you wish and I can try to help you find someone) you'd probably want to find therapists who are good at grief and loss issues.  I know of one person in Edina but not sure what suburb you're in.  That said, really thinking about what you want will help.  Some therapists ironically aren't really all that into "talking" but are focused on short term SOLUTIONS.  Your issue has no SOLUTION so you want to avoid solution-focused therapists!  A mess indeed.  The psychology today website has a huge therapist directory so I'd probably do a search for your zip code and grief/loss and see who shows up.  Just because not everyone passed away doesn't mean it isn't terrifying and a part of you dies every time you hear of the suicide attempt!  You could also be dealing with some PTSD from all this, so a trauma therapist may also be really useful.

And again, I apologize for therapists being unhelpful!  Frustrates me to no end!

    You have a PM!

  • Haven't kept reading the responses, but responded to your PM!

I specifically would recommend Natalie Hopfield at the Eagan location.  (Eagan is the main location, and there are definitely evening and weekend hours.)  When they ask why you would like to see a therapist, just say that you have some family issues and life changes and you are having trouble adjusting.  They just need to write something down for intake so that the therapist has some minor clue why you want to go in.  It shouldn't feel like judgment, and if it does, then that may not be the place for you.  Good luck!

  • i used to see mary mullenbach. her office is right by Fairview Southdale hospital and she has evening appointments. i really liked her a lot. i have medica for insurance and she was covered.

  • I am one who believes everyone can benifit from therapy weather they are going through something or not. Everyone has issues and could stand to learn something new about themselves or different ways of handling stress.

Anyway. I too used to see someone at Nystrom. It's been about 4 years, and the person I saw left (I still miss her, she went to work with people with eating disorders at a hospital), but they are really nice there.

I'm sorry you are going through so much. Hang in there. Also, be prepared to wait awhile to get your first appointment. I've always had a several week wait to get an appointment with someone new. Good luck.
