Cleaning Hardwood Floors?

How do you clean your hardwood floors?

We have a dog, so always lots of hair. We first vacuum with a Dyson. Then we use the Swiffer Wet Jet. It is all quite a process. And I am hating going through all the pads we need to use. So I am looking at doing something else. Possibly getting the Shark.

Anyone have any experience with the Shark? OR have any other suggestions on how you clean your hard wood floors?

TIA!

Re: Cleaning Hardwood Floors?

  • My mom owns a cleaning business and is friends with someone who owns a hardwood floor company. He told her to only use vinegar and water on hardwood floors. It disinfects and doesn't hurt the varnish or coating.

I've really wanted to buy the Shark, seems like the steam would really clean it. My husband used to use the hand held Shark in college for cleaning and he loved it.

  • I Swiffer at least once a day, then I use vinegar and water once a week or every two weeks. For spills, I just use a vinegar and water solution in a spray bottle. After I mop, I wipe up all the water with towels and make sure that it's completely dry so there's no warping or anything, make sure the mop is really well wrung out before you mop so there's no puddles of solution. We have the original hardwood flooring in our house - built in 1949.

  • I have original floors in my 1913 home.  Up until recently, I alway just hand-scrubbed the floors with a vinegar-water solution (after sweeping/vacuuming), but that is fairly time-consuming.

I just recently purchased the "sh-mop": http://www.gaiam.com/product/sh-mop-kit.do and it's great!  The washable terry-cloth covers are really thick, so you can clean a lot of floor area with one.  I just spray one down with my vinegar-water solution, rinse as needed, and then toss the used one into the laundry.  Super easy, and much more eco-friendly than the swiffer type products with disposable chemically cloths.

I purchased mine (plus extra cloths) from Gaiam.com, but they're also available on Amazon.com etc.

  • We sweep almost daily (dog hair accumulates so fast!), and once a week, we clean with a vinegar/water solution and a microfiber mop. This is the mop we use - you can get refills on the microfiber pad, but you can also wash & reuse, which is what we do.

  • I do a good old scrub down once a year or so with Murphy's oil soap but the rest of the time, I just vacuum and run a damp mop around.  Most of our floors are covered by rugs so there is minimal exposed floor to work on and it goes quick.
  • I know a hardwood installer and refinisher.  He says vinegar and water, or if you have the gene that makes you hate vinegar like I do, then water and dish soap.  Murphy's Oil Soap is actually bad for the floors because it causes a build-up.  And microfiber cloths are the best.
  • we use this...http://www.target.com/Bissell-Microfiber-Floor-Duster-Refill/dp/B003B6IX2W/ref=sc_qi_detaillink (sorry for the long link) it works really nice at picking up dust and hair, not so much for things on the floor, so I normally use this, and then sweep. I have been using the swifer wet, I need to start using the water and vinegar, that is a great idea.

  • I use a Shark after vaccuming the pet hair up. I don't do it as often as I should, but it works nice.
