So today I had my interview for a position I really want at the college I went to. Apparently I did ok, because I just got an email from my interviewer saying that I am definitely one of the finalists, and they want to see a list of professional references.
Only thing is... I'm not really sure who my references should be! I've been debating over this for a while. I work for a very small company and have basically been the only employee of my boss for the past 4.5 years. A few other employees have come and gone, but no one has stayed for more than 6 months. We have new 2 employees now, but have only been here since the spring.
So do I tell my boss that I applied for this job and ask him to be my reference? (my sister is convinced that I should), or do I scrounge around and use some slightly less relevant references (like my 5 year part time job boss, and the more current co-worker that was only here for 6 months) so as not to tip off the boss that I am looking around for a new job just yet...
Thoughts?? I'm thinking that I need to figure this out over the weekend so that I can get him the references on Monday.

What did you end up doing megs? That's a tough situation. If you feel that telling your boss would not harm your working relationship and he wouldn't do anything to terminate your job or make your job miserable when he finds out your looking go for it. If you don't want him to know at all, then I wouldn't ask him to be a reference.
Personally, I have never used a current boss as a reference. One reason being I hate awkward situations and if I ended up not getting the job I was going for, it would be weird. Another reason, Ohio is an "at will" state as far as employment, so I always figured if I told a boss I was looking they could/would fire me then and there.
mb&d, I played it safe and kept the boss out of the loop for now. Though I think my boss would take it well, I would still feel insanely awkward if I didn't get the new job.
I sent over my other references today and am crossing my fingers
