WTF do I buy a 5 month old?
Don't laugh, but I'm Christmas shopping already. My niece will be 5 mos at Christmas and I already bought her a cute outfit, but she has a brazillian clothes already, so I'd like to get her a fun toy she can grow in to.
What would be a good toy to get?

I bet her FUPA's name is Shane, like the gunslinger/drifter of literature.--HappyTummy
Re: WTF do I buy a 5 month old?
I don't know if it starts them down a bad path of dependency, but I LOVE buying lovies for babies. It's my signature gift now...
Any of the Bunnies by the Bay lovies are so super cute, it kills me. Amazon has a good bunch and if you're a Prime member you get them with free shipping. Much cheaper than ordering from the Bunnies by the Bay site.
Other fun toy, toy things are jumperoos or the musical table thing... kids always love that thing.

Connor couldn't get enough of these type of toys beginning around that age. Perfect for entertaining at restaurants and while you make dinner.
Oooh, they're so cute!

Books are always good. We just bought Ethan this thing this weekend. You'd think it cured cancer, AIDs, and Ebola by how excited he gets over it.

I suggest this as a little gift. I am sure you are going to get something else bigger, but this is Ryker's favorite thing ever.
I use it to distract him while changing diapers, in the car etc etc. And if he is full on crying, it stops it.

That's the same thing I was recommending, only I couldn't make it clicky from Safari.
Dimi still loves this, but I think the recommended age starts at 6 months.
Toys that encourage crawling are good. Dimi liked these okay, but when Bug was that age she freaking loved them.
Anything with texture is good. I don't think you could go wrong with any of these, and they should stay interesting for a long time:
I never met a kid who didn't like an Oball:

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
oh good. I'm just going to let Pickle play with all the cat toys. Baby = Cat. I'm convinced.
Ditto to the texture balls that PDX posted, they have them at Costco right now too, if you are a Costco shopper.
I LOVE Bunnies by the Bay also. The lovies are awesome, as are the books! Cutest little ABC rhyming books ever.

Oh, and board books like these are great because they fit little hands and they can flip the pages really easily. (They're about 2 1/2" across.)

Sean has one of those fascination station things and loves it but it doesn't work as well when it's not anchored to something and we don't have much to anchor it to right now. I think we'll be getting the high chair out very soon, though.
If you want to go big, I suggest the jumperoo or something like it. Sean is in obsessive luuuuuuuuuv with his jumpy frog: http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-SpaceSaver-Bounce-Spin-Froggy/dp/B002OOWADU/ref=sr_1_1?s=gateway&ie=UTF8&qid=1285602382&sr=8-1
The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
Ha Ha. I think I copied yours to look at and then accidentally posted yours again. I think I'm going to get one of those for Ethan though.
This is what I meant to post.

He loves mirrors right now, so he can look at himself in it, and it lights up and plays music whenever he touches it. He loves it. It has different settings for sitting babies vs crawling babies too.
alison loves her music table, and it doesn't even have the legs installed yet. pushing buttons and spinning spinners is her forte currently.
and since it is a gift for someone else, the annoying sound effects shouldn't factor into the equation for you!
