Almost FL bound again! Any tips on driving 15 hours with 2 toddlers?

My parents always rent a condo in FL for the month of October. I am taking the girls and staying for a week and then Carly is coming home with my dad/brother/sister and me and Braelyn are staying an additional week. I am so excited and can't wait for another vacation

I am extremely nervous about driving this far with 2 toddlers though! I am not nervous about B as much as I am C. My brother and I am driving down together. Any tips for the long drive with the kiddos? I plan on packing snacks, portable dvd player, and a few new toys and we will stop at a hotel at bedtime to try to break up the drive in 2 days. Any other tips to make it go smoothly???

  • My sister just drove out to AZ with her kids a couple of months ago and she said they rented DVD's from the red box things. They can be returned anywhere and that way she could find new movies that the kids hadn't seen yet and not have to worry about how to return them.

Her boys are a little older though.

  • No way in heck would I drive that far w/ my girls unless it was at night! Abby would no way be good, movies or not!! Have you thought about just driving at night when they would normally be sleeping?

We did drive 15 hours last summer but Abby was only 3 months so she slept most of it. Addison on the other hand would not sleep. She talked the entire time! I did the same thing ... new toys (drawing toys etc) a new movie. Also of course drinks and snacks. I'm interested to see how it goes! I seriously couldn't do it during day hours! However flying is pretty stressful too ... at least driving you can take a ton of stuff w/ you.

     Have fun!!

  • Kelly - I would love to drive through the middle of the night, but DH isn't going and it will be my brother driving most of it and I do not trust that he will stay fully awake or pull over if he gets to tired. So I really am trying to avoid that.

I am thinking we are leaving at about 1ish on a Friday afternoon. If we can drive until about 11-12am (with a stop at dinner and a break or two) and then stop at a hotel we would only have about 4 hours on the rode the following day.

But at the same time my brother works 3rd shift, so I may see if he can sleep all day and then us leave at like 7 on Friday night and be there by early Saturday morning. Especially if my other sister is going with us where I am sure her or I can stay awake and make sure my brother isn't getting tired.

  • Where in FL? We drove to Orlando and left at 5pm in the evening. We hit FL border in 12 hrs!!!!!!!!!! We drove straight through w/ maybe 2 gas stops. The kids slept the entire time (no babies yet). It took us another 3 hours to get to Orlando. The nice thing about night is no traffic! Ron flew through Atlanta.

Last summer when we drove home from Virginia Beach we got stuck in a 3 hour traffic jam near DC. Our short 12 hour trip took over 15 hours to get home! It was horrible! We left in the morning so we did get stuck in all the major cities traffic. On the way there we stopped at Hershey PA and stayed over and the next day drove to DC and stayed for a few days and then from DC drove to VB for 5 days. I loved doing it that way!! It was nice breaking up the drive. We left in the evening for the drive to Hershey also. That was a 7 hour drive to get to Hershey & I know even at that "short" of a drive the kids would not have been good in the car. When driving to DC & then to VB we did do day hours for those legs.

  • Kel - We will be going to Panama City.
