Dumb question re Insurance

Does anyone know why your auto insurance rates are affected by your credit score?

TIA . . . we are looking for new insurance and I want to be educated in my decision if we choose to switch.  We love our current agent, but got a quote to save $80/month.  I hope it's not too good to be true, the savings would be amazing.

Also, any good/bads about All State? Auto and Home Owners.

Re: Dumb question re Insurance

  • People with lower credit scores are considered to be higher risk by insurance companies than people with higher credit scores.  The level of risk impacts insurance premiums.
  • We have Allstate and have never had any problems. They been great when we've had claims and our agent is AWESOME. We are very happy with them and they've always had the best rates when we looked around.

  • I agree with the pp that lower credit scores are considered a higher risk for paying on time, etc.

As for the rate, ask about the discounts that are included in that rate.  I know many companies give a "new customer" discount which makes it seem great to start out with but then after 6 mos or a year it's right back up or even higher.
