$30 grocery week

OK ladies--I've over-spent a little this month on our groceries.  If you only had $30 to spend for the rest of the week, what groceries would you buy??

For the record, I do have on hand:

2 pork chops (small)

A 3.5lb full chicken

dried pasta

peppers

Onion

cherry tomatoes

pasta sauce

milk

bread

Re: $30 grocery week

  • Well these are some of the meals I'd make.  The items are bolded that you'd have to buy.

Baked chicken with roasted cherry tomatoes

Pork chops (I have a great recipe that is easy but its at home) with baked sweet potatoes

    French Toast with scrambled eggs

Chicken (leftover from the first meal) with sauteed onion and peppers mixed with some pasta sauce over pasta

  • Do you need breakfast & lunch stuff too? Maybe my estimates are off, and you might need more for breakfast/lunch, but this is what I'd do.

For breakfast, I'd probably do english muffins. Kroger often sells 6/$1. Say you buy 2, that's $2. Or oatmeal or generic cereal.

Lunch, I'd probably make PB&J if you have PB and J. Do you?  I'd eat it w/ some carrots (usually can get 2 lbs for under $2).

I'd figure the chicken to last you at least 2 nights, though I'd hope for enough bits & peices leftover after 2 nights to use it in a stir fry for a 3'rd night. The chops w/ the sides will put you w/ 4 nights total

Bag of potatoes to use as a side for the chops & chicken - $4 or so?

Frozen veggies for a side for chops & chicken - Can usually find a bag for $1. 3 bags to use as side - $3. 1 bag to use as stir fry - $1, tot. $4. I'd freshen the stir fry w/ your fresh onions & peppers.

Then I'd make a baked pasta dish to serve you at least 2 nights.

    Ground beef/turkey ($5)

4 cup bag of mozz cheese ($5)

Then I'd buy some pizza dough to get you through one last night - $3?

  • A+ Ideas ladies, thank you.  I actually forgot that I do have several red potatoes and eggs and of COURSE we have PB &J.  We're Americans, after allWink!! .

The chicken would only last us 2 nights.  Last time I bought a 3lb (on the dot) and it was one meal and very small leftovers.  :(  The chickens I buy are pasture raised so they don't yield as much meat but BOY are they tasty (the best meal i made to date!).

(I don't think we'll need breakfast since I do have some oatmeal and a little cereal.)

If anyone else has any ideas, please let me know!  TIA!

  • Can you make breakfast for dinner? Pancakes or waffles + eggs.
  • One of my favorite meals!  I think we might even have some frozen turkey bacon.  Genius, dear Terp, Genius.
