Nasty Linoleum Floors

I currently live in a rental property and our kitchen has old gross linoleum floors.  I either mop or use my Swifer Wet Jet every week but just can't get the floor clean.  I see that there are a lot of posts about steam mops... would that work for my linoleum?  I would love any suggestions.

Re: Nasty Linoleum Floors

  • Unfortunately the only thing that's going to get them clean is elbow grease, my best suggestion would be some baking soda and water and a scrub brush . . . Steam might loosen some of it, but it's going to be really expensive and may not completely work for you . . . Your best bet is to scrub . . although you might be able to talk to your landlord about replacing the lino if you show them a good price (like go down to the home depot and check out their clearence tile and lino rack and see if there might be something you could offer to install {pre-adhesived vinyl tile is really easy})
  • Mr. Clean Magic Eraser mop and a bucket of water were all that worked on my mom's floors from the 80s. It worked really well though. She worked on those floors so much, but it had a ridge pattern in them and dirt and dirty water always got stuck. The magic eraser mop was the only thing that got the crud out of the grooves and divets in the linoleum.
  • Our home was a rental before we bought it, and the kitchen is the one thing the previous owner didn't touch/remodel.  (House was otherwise in model condition, and priced at least $40k under local comps because of it).

The linoleum floor is NASTY.  It has cuts, it has stains...nothing gets them off.  The steam mop doesn't work (but at least makes me feel ok about dog and DD running around), Magic Eraser didn't work except on one stain, baking soda paste...barkeeper's friend...nope.  We will be remodeling in the next year.

I agree with whoever said maybe your LL will spring for an adhesive tile possibility.

  • Thanks for the suggestions.  I'll definitely try the magic eraser mop.  I had no idea that such a thing exsited... I couldn't live without my magic erasers.

I don't think that changing the linoleum is an option because we live in military housing and they're pretty stingy.
