I don't get it (parent related)

Every time I see my parents, my dad tells us, "You should really think about buying a bigger house."

I don't get it. Why is he in such a rush for us to own a house?

Don't get me wrong, I would love more space, but our living situation is perfectly fine for us now. It's super convenient for us (20 min walk/5 min bike from work), and we're saving money while we're living in this shoebox. We own our condo so it's not like we're "throwing money away" in rent.

If it were anyone but my dad, I'd think maybe it was his way of saying, "Hurry up and have kids (in your bigger house)", but he's not subtle like that. If that was his reasoning, he'd just say it.

Any ideas?

  • Have you expressed anything about people bugging you about having kids? Maybe he's starting to be subtle now because of something he heard. No idea otherwise. Or, he thinks the two of you could afford it and he'd like to see you upgrade.

  • Yeah, other than the kids thing, I have no idea.  Maybe he thinks Sherlock needs more places to sleep in?

We'll just not tell H about this little fact, m'kay?

  • lol, Sherlock could certainly use more places to run around.

We don't talk too much about future kids with him. My mom throws in a forward-looking statement about grandkids every now and then but that's about it.

I guess he's just being weird. He thinks we're poor because V is still a student, but then he thinks we ought to get ourselves a bigger house. Ooook.

  • Could it be a status thing for him? As in, he thinks he raised you to have nice(r) things and the condo isn't what he had invisioned your first house being?

This strikes me as the most feasible explanation.

    Bah!
