Nice kitchen reno surprise

We were wondering what is under the laminate floor in our kitchen. There is hardwood everywhere else, so I was hoping it was in the kitchen. DH started pulling the laminate up last night, and underneath is, yup! Hardwood! It will obviously need refinishing, but it looks to be in good condition from the spot that's open, but I'm excited :)

So we'll have to clear out the kitchen to have the floor refinished, and we'll probably have to change our cabinet color choice if we match the kitchen floor to the rest of the house. A red-brown floor and med. brown cabinets might be too much of the same color.

I'm thinking we'll be without a kitchen for longer than I would like, but will be worth it in the end!

  • That's awesome and I'm jealous! :)

We pulled up a corner of our carpet and we have wood, but it's not nice hardwoods.

  • That's nice they are in good condition. We have hardwoods under our flooring but they were in really bad shape, paint spills, names carved into them, and plywood patches in places so we just covered them back up.
  • That was one of the selling points on the house; hardwood throughout. Refinishing was the first thing done when DH bought the house, and we get lots of compliments. I'm crossing my fingers that it's in good condition, now remembering what the neighbor told us about a party long ago and a keg or something spilled in the kitchen. We'll see I guess!

I do wonder why the previous owner covered them up w/laminate, ugh. I know trends come and go, but hardwood floors are classic!
