So I saw a hypnotist yesterday

and it was just a consultation but I'm considering going.  The only thing is it is a lot of $$$$ and insurance doesn't cover it.

He didn't even ask me about the background of my phobia, and I tried not to, but he did ask me if I could verbalize what it feels like to go in and get blood drawn.  Which had me bawling without even talking about it.

I won't get into a ton of detail but he explained how what he does works, and it made sense to me.  He had asked me what my job was and when I said engineer he talked to me very logically and it seemed like he was talking to me in my kind of terms.

The biggest thing- I had never said it to anyone, but the last time I went to a psychiatrist about this, at one point she said that she thought I liked being this way and that maybe I didn't want to change.  Which made me wonder if that was true but at the same time just... I felt terrible.  Like if that was true, I'd never be able to fix this.  And that was never brought up during the consultation, but this guy said to me that it is NOT my fault.  And backed up by explaining how the brain works, and told me it IS a phobia for me, and it is not my fault.

But he also said he thinks he can help, and it will take 8 sessions and 2 follow-ups.  I guess that's right in the middle- some people take 15 sessions, others take 3 (always 2 follow ups).

Dave and I are discussing the $.  He said it would be worth it if it helped.  It will still take some work on my part afterwards- this would help remove my inhibitions, preconceptions, and habits.  I'd still have to get myself to a calm place when I get blood drawn, but he said the more often I do it, the easier it would get every time.

Anybody have any experience with this, at all?  My only hesitation is the $.  And I have to admit I'm a little nervous about being hypnotized because I won't be in control of myself- I can be a control freak!

(And I'm going to disappear for awhile- all day meeting today and tomorrow at work.  But I will be checking back even if I'm not responding during the day today.)

Re: So I saw a hypnotist yesterday

  • I don't have any experience with hypnotists, but I say go for it as long as you can work out the $$ aspect. And, as long as you're comfortable, which it sounds like you totally are. And I agree with him, this isn't your fault and you don't sound like you "like this" because you're taking lots of steps to get over/through it. Good for you and I hope it helps!
  • I've heard good things about hypnotists with various forms of phobias or habits, but honestly don't have any experience with them myself.  However, if you think this will help you and you can work the financial part out then it's worth a shot.
  • go jen! glad you took the step to go to this guy. I'm sure the money is sickening to think about. But I say do what you need to do if you have the money to spare! Cause if you think about it, we're only getting older. And we're bound to get jabbed a TON of times in our old age!

LOL that's kind of what my mom said!

I'm pretty sure I'm just going to do it... the amount of $ it's going to cost, though, I'll be really upset if it doesn't work!  They did have me set up my first appointment when I was there, but I need to change it because I didn't realize we had other plans that day, plus they said I need to pay before my first appointment so they can plan out my treatment.  (They said I could start with the 3 session treatment and then bump it up, but that would end up costing a lot more $ because I wouldn't get the discount for having more sessions.  So they were kind of waiting to see what I chose to do.)

I hope this works!!!  Thanks for "listening".  I'm not really talking about this to many people because I'm tired of the baby watch and I know this will start it, if they know I'm trying something new.
