silly poll: how do you say this?

If you were going to take a trip to Disneyland/Walt Disney World/etc how would you phrase it?

I would say, "We're going to Disneyland."

But a lot of other people (judging by posts I've read elsewhere on the Knot/Bump/Nest) say, "We're going to Disney."

The second way is odd to me because in my mind, "Disney" is a person (Walt Disney) or a corporation (all divisions, not just the theme parks) and not a place. Maybe it's because my dad and stepmom work for the Mouse and I've never heard them or any of their coworkers refer to it as "going to Disney." But it seems to be a really common way to refer to it, so maybe I'm just a stick-in-the-mud lol!

  • I wouldn't say "Disney" just because it doesn't differentiate which one!

Yeah, this is the other thing that confuses me. For a long time I thought Disney = Walt Disney World, but eventually I realized (after reading lots of honeymoon posts on the Knot) that it was being used to refer to Disneyland too.

  • It might also depend on where you grew up...I'm an east coast gal, so I know Disney World and call it by that name. I've never been to Disneyland in Cali, so I never even think to call "Disney" Disneyland.

  • Having lived in So.Cal all my life and just went to Disney World last week, I have only heard people say Disneyland or Disney World.

  • Yup, I call it either Disneyland or Disney World...I've never heard anyone call it just "Disney"...

I wonder if it's a regional thing...I vaguely recall thinking at one stage that most of the people who said it were from the Midwest. I have no idea if that's true, but I definitely remember wondering if it was something more common to that area.

  • Being an East Coastie, I think a lot of peeps from my area might say "We're going to Disney". And with no question, that would mean Disney World. Otherwise you would refer to Disneyland.
  • I've have discovered that "Disney" means different places depending on what US coast you grew up on.  To me, it'll always mean Disneyland; but to my BF from NY she thinks I mean Disneyworld.

I think it's regional.  Growing up on the East Coast, "Disney" means Disney World in Florida (and may even include Sea World!).

  • I voted for "Disney" but I guess I kinda do both, depending on who I'm talking to.  Or maybe it's just that when I lived in Orlando I called it Disney and it was a given that it was Disney World.  Now that I'm close to the west coast I say Disneyland or Disney World but when I speak to my friends in FL about visiting I call Disney World "Disney".  Ok.  Confusing, I know.

But, yeah, I think most Midwesterners and East Coasters call Disney World "Disney".

  • Just "Disney" seems weird.  The thing that irks me is people saying "we're in Disneyland" when they just mean they're in LA visiting.....you aren't IN Disneyland at the time, you're IN Anaheim and going to visit Disneyland.
