Has the class warfare in this country

Always been this intense?  I was just looking at a post on E08 and thinking about some of the recent threads about taxes, entitlement programs and the stereotypes of the rich, the poor, etc.  I don't know if this election is just bringing out the worse in everyone, or has there always been this level of disdain among classes and I just didn't notice as much.

Re: Has the class warfare in this country

  • I think its been getting worse over the past decade or two because its the go to for both sides of the aisle. Both sides use it to rally their supporters. They fuel the fire.
  • Also, as the gap grows people on both sides get angrier about it.

  • The divide has been getting wider, so I think that exacerbates an already contentious issue.  And as the economy worsens, resentment of those not suffering as much is going to increase.

  • while i agree it's certainly intensified given the dismal economy, i tend to think it's a bit more intense on the nest. in my job, i speak to a wide swath of "everyday" folks all the time. and i rarely hear the vitriol that i read here.

to me, the E08, doesn't lean right or left, but rather "nuts" of center.

We currently have the widest income gap in decades. I believe I read since before the Depression. That creates a lot of resentment. Understandably IMO.

  • Its really bad here in Atlanta. I have really found that class discrimination is way more prevalent down here.

The income gap just declined to its lowest level since 2002, and that's without including redistributionist income like the EITC into the stats.

Edited to answer the OP. I don't think this election is any worse than the previous ones, on this issue.

  • I'm thinking its the board.  That board is making me crazy.  I'm posting crazy for the sake of continuing to rile everyone up.  I used to never do that.  I need to hang out here more for my mental health's sake.

Maybe it is being on the Nest that makes it worse for me.  I guess people feel free to say things they would ordinarily refrain from saying when they are anonymous.  I don't know if I am better off knowing that some people have such strong thoughts or stereotypes based on one's class.

Oh for sure! It's one thing listening to politicians, but it's another to face it yourself.  I know I wasn't on message boards and debating this kind of thing in 2000 or 2004. So it's definitely worse in that respect (well just in the past few months).

A person can make stats say whatever they want. That chart doesn't explain its methods, its raw data, what they used for income, whether or not they adjusted for the size of the household and I know they didn't judge actual wealth. The footnotes say that chart was compiled by the Institute for Policy Studies Program on Inequality and the Common Good. When I google that I get their website which says, "The Program on Inequality and the Common Good focuses on the dangers that growing inequality pose for U.S. democracy, economic health and civic life. The Program coordinates the Working Group on Extreme Inequality."

They obviously have an agenda and can't be believed more than actual Census figures.

Just so I understand for myself, you are arguing that there is no gap in this country?  No haves and have nots, right?  That is just so wrong and out of touch.

  • Yeah there's one thread over there that's just a post or two away from "how do Republicans/the "rich" sleep at night?"

I think it seems worse because of that board.  Most people I know in real life do't throw out such generalities as if they are fact.

Huh? Where on earth did you get that from? My first post said the gap has recently narrowed. It's impossible to extinguish an income gap. That didn't even happen in the communist USSR.

That link directs me to the Census Bureau, but it's a Page Not Found error message.

  • Like everyone has stated, E08 and the rest of the Nest is a unique place where people feel more comfortable expressing their opinions.  I live in two different worlds as I travel b/w NYC and Tampa almost every weekend.  Perhaps I just don't run into the most vocal crowds, but I do not see the level of disdain among the classes as displayed on E08.

A part of me gets so riled up when reading the posts about rich vs poor, middle class, or whatever.   I've lived as a member of most of the classes we discuss, from poverty in the Philippines (which makes poverty in America look damn lucky in comparison), to middle class, to at least high income DINKs.  There are so many factors that prop up our class system and income disparity, it makes me sad how easy it is for someone to despise a member of a different income bracket. It seems that the crazy posters on E08 only see the world through their eyes.

I myself am a product of the "American Dream" in every sense of the phrase.  I am very torn on how to address the income disparity in this country, especially since I was not born here and have benefitted from a combination of hard work, luck, and help from others.  My conservative side wishes we can reform our tax codes but my liberal side understands that we cannot burden the poor if they already have so little to live on. Private charity donations only go so far since I still believe that human nature tends to hoard more than give away wealth.  Again, I have no idea how to fix our issues in this country but I wish people would show more respect to each other on that board.

lol. well, crap, if you do that, can you clean up my typo and take out the "the" before E08. the copy desk don't need to know Wink

Ditto all this.  Although I'm voting Dem regardless for choice/gay rights issues, I don't necessarily think Obama's tax plan is a good idea indefinitely.  I think ebb and flow is necessary.  I also really hope he's serious about cutting stuff that doesn't work and I hope he's got a really sharp scalpel.  No one is ever going to have their interests served completely and it'll never be a perfect system.  But we've just had 8 years of tax cuts for the wealthy.  So let's try something different for awhile and see how it works.
