Those of you who have been to Paris - Sept....

Any rec's on what to do?  I'm going in the winter but I'm REALLY excited!  I want to see the museums but are there any that are better than others?  I was told to get a metro card and a museum pass.  I want to go to the Eiffel tower - has anyone done dinner in either of the 2 restaurants in it?  Anything else we should see or go too?  We'll be there for 5 nights.  I've never even been to Europe so this is all new to me!

Re: Those of you who have been to Paris - Sept....

  • Hey! I went back in 2007 and LOVED Paris...

Definitely get a Metro Card and the museum pass - we thought it was well worth the money! Im a sucker for war museums and I spent hours in the French Imperial War museum 0 so interesting! Also, get to the Louvre early so you can see all the famous paintings first with no lines, then explore the rest of the museum

For the Eiffel Tower - go up at night vs. during the day, but make sure to get in line early - we waited several hours, and I know they close off the upper levels around 9:30-10:00

La Duree (a patisserie) on the Champs de Elysse is a MUST visit. Their macaroon cookies (not the coconut cookie we have here but the light and delicious sandiwch-like cookie) will melt in your mouth - i brought home a box!

  • I went to Paris for a weekend while I was studying abroad. I loved the Musee d'Orsay. I wish I had taken a boat cruise on the Seine. Ditto to PPs for doing the Eiffel Tower at night, bring A jacket or something though because it was chilly up there.

  • Ditto to the Musee D'Orsay - that was my favorite museum.  And they have an amazing cafe there as well.

My absolute favorite thing to do in Paris was go to Sainte Chappelle.  It's near Notre Dame, and it's an old chapel filled with medieval stained glass windows that depict the entire bible all the way around.  Visit in the early afternoon when the sun is shining in - it is breathtaking!

We did a bus and boat tour, which was pretty fun and a neat way to see the city.  Window shopping is a must, as is checking out pastry shops.  When will you be there?  When we went in September/October 2004 there was a night festival called Nuit Blanche  where there were tons of street performers and everything was lit up outside with white lights.  It was very cool.  :-)

Also, we did the Arc du Triumph, because I can't walk on things i can see through and apparently the Eiffel tower is all metal grating.  It worked out well, though, because I have amazing pictures of the skyline with Le Tour Eiffel in them.  :-)

  • Oh, also, about the Museum Pass: look up any museums you might want to see, because most have a free day of the week to visit.  If you plan accordingly, you don't need to pay admission and therefore wouldn't need to shell out for the Museum Pass.

  • Yay!

The museum and subway pass is a def!

DH and I took at day trip to Versailes (sp) and we loved it! My friends went there and didn't dig it as much but I have a feeling that you would.

Favorite restaurants that we went to are Fish (some aussie and cali guys own it and the food is to die for...you must call for a reservation a good two weeks in advance and Dous Magots (sp) it's spelled weird but it's amazing!

Best pastry shop we went to was Laduree which is located in the St.Germaine area which is also where Fish is located and a fabulous artist if you want the details.

We also did a cooking class that was a lot of fun, if you want the info I can give it to you. We went to the markets and picked our ingredents, it was delightful!

Ummmmm I could go on....let me know if you want more. ;o) Who are you going with and when???

Took 2 years & 8 months to make our baby! Lilypie First Birthday tickers
  • Any and all details are appreciated. We are going in Feb. and will be there for 5 nights.  I'm going to have to write down all the ideas.

    Thanks ladies!

  • I went to Paris on a student exchange during high school and I have to say I loved the boat ride on the seine...I went to louve but I had a cappuccino and hung out in the cafe- wasnt feeling the art...

and ditto to the jacket even a fleece...I froze

  • Oh!  My fav part was a crepe with strawberries walking along the Champs De L&*#$(!  (I can't remember how to spell it!).

I did a Mike's Bikes tour... some time this week I'll go through my scrapbook and journal to remind me of what I liked, it's been almost 10 years since I've been there!

How's your VERY basic French?? I took about 6 years of it in high school and whenever I'd try it they would just answer back in English-thank goodness.  But, if you just say s'il vous plait and merci a lot you both will be fine!

I took 4 years of French in high school. I can speak the language better than I can write it so I'm hoping that is enough.  I know the basic words and remember a lot of vocabulary.  I doubt I could speak complete sentences very well but I think people would be able to understand me.  I've been talking to a few of the French teachers at school and I'm getting the run down on stuff.  Plus 2 of the teachers going frequent Europe so that should help.
