Boston and New York ladies

What's the weather like in January?  I can Google average temperatures, but how is it REALLY?  Miserable?  Really cold, but you can still function?  And keep in mind I'm from Texas.  This is from the perspective of a possible tourist who will want to do touristy things...

Re: Boston and New York ladies

  • Well, as always, it really depends.

There are weeks in January where it is fine - at times it's even nice.  There are also weeks that you walk out the door and your breathe is literally taken away and you feel like you can't breath.  I've had a drop of soda freeze instantly on my hand.  Where any exposed skin just hurts.  But those are fairly rare days.  I just don't want you to come up here and at least not be warned.  And being that you're from TX, I would assume your cold threshold is lower than New Englanders'.

The worst of the cold, however, is usually the first few weeks of February.

  • Yeah. What she said. lol

It really does vary. One day will be 40 and beautiful, the next it's blizzardville and hovering around 0.

@kmt - Interesting that you feel the worst is in Feb... I always think of January as the worst. :)

  • New York is the same it can be in the 40's with wind chills that feel below zero and you'll need to bundle up or it can be cold but not windy where it's comfortable to stroll outside. It's a beautiful time of year. You just have to come prepared with scarfs, hats, gloves and sweaters and you'll enjoy the city.

  • I'm not from there, but I did visit NYC a few years ago in January.  It was cold, but we still enjoyed all of the touristy things including taking the boat to Ellis Island and such. I thought it was a fun time to go because some of the Christmas decorations were still up and I found confetti in Times Square from the NYE party.
I am from Idaho though so my cold tolerance is probably a little higher than yours.

  • Thanks!  H turns 30 in January and he wants to take a trip with his brother and his wife.   I suggested cruise, but the dates aren't working out.  Him and his brother decided they want to fly to Boston for a couple of days, take the Amtrak to NY for a couple days, then fly home.

I have never visited Boston or NY (H lived in NY for about 6 months) and would love to visit both places... but January?  It's freaking me out a bit.

Thanks for the info!  We'll see what happens...

Hmmm - let's do an informal poll this year and see who's right :)  H and I always think February is the absolute worst.
