POLL: Would you have worn a second hand dress?

I am considering opening up a second hand (non-virgin) and samples (virgin) wedding dress store in my hometown.  It appeals to me because I would like to give brides at the lower end of the market as much service as those who spend lots of money get.  Plus the whole 'recycling' thing.

So I thought you ladies would be the best to ask, would you have worn a non-virgin dress for your day?

Re: POLL: Would you have worn a second hand dress?

  • I bought my dress at a Brides Aginst Breast Cancer event. They have both new and used dresses. My dress had been worn before but was still in very good condition. There where a couple of stains on the train but my alterations gal was able to get them all out. Plus since it was previously worn there was already a busle so it saved me even more $$$. My dress was 50% off the DB store price and some of the money went toward breast cancer research!

  • I set out to get my dress with the idea that I wasn't going to spend a lot of money. If there had been someplace nearby here that sold secondhand dresses I def would have checked it out. I think it's a good idea.

  • I would have no problem wearing a used or sample wedding dress. Basically the reason I didn't is because I have a large chest, and most of the sample sizes wouldn't have fit me up top.
  • That sounds awesome.

Honestly though, I would never buy a wedding dress as long as you were calling it "non virgin". Is this from New Zealand? "Vintage" sounds much nicer :P

    Deflowered dresses?

I really like the idea of supporting small businesses over supporting foreign dress factories.  Had I found a location that sold these kinds of dresses I would have looked more carefully into this.

  • Thanks for your suppost guys.  :)  I will keep working on what to call them, and let you know how it all goes.

First things first, find a business name and write a business plan!

  • I don't think I would buy a used wedding dress from ebay, but if there was a store that specialized in used wedding dresses in my area, I would have looked there as long as they were well taken care of and clean.

    Good luck.  Keep us updated!

  • I am not sure I would buy a recycled dress, but I did get a recycled slip and tried to get a recycled veil, tiera, etc.  I think there is a big market for those types of items. I know that there is a website, www.recycledbride.com  I think, that has used bridal dresses and accessories. I checked it all the time for a viel, slip, jewelry, purse, etc.

So, I am not so sure about the dress, but definitely on the other items.

  • There is a movement now of "the green bride" I read a book when we first got engaged about how enviromently unfriendly the wedding indistry is. You could always take that rought with the business? The book was called Green Bride Guide: How to Create an Earth-Friendly Wedding on Any Budget  by Kate Harrison.

  • I would've worn a second-hand dress if it had been "the one."  I really liked the experience of shopping for my own, brand new dress, but had I found a second-hand or sample dress that was it, I would've gotten it.
  • I'm in the minority, because no, I wouldn't wear a secondhand dress.  I have a real hang up about wearing clothes that someone (even my own family members) had already worn before.

But as I said, I'm in the minority.  Lots of women totally would wear a secondhand dress and that's cool!  There are some boutiques around town that sell used gowns and you wouldn't believe some of the designers -- Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Oscar de la Renta, etc.  Pretty cool.

    Go for it girl!
