Greek Yogurt?

Can someone explain to me what makes Greek yogurt special/different from regular yogurt?

Re: Greek Yogurt?

  • The price?

I don't know, I haven't bought it. I look at it in the grocery store, but then I don't know what makes it special/different so I don't know why it's worth the extra money and I end up not buying it. I'd love to know the answer to this too ...

  • Google says it's thicker.  I hate yogurt.

  • It has more protein than regular yogurt. From what I've read it's something like 20 grams of protein per 1 cup of greek yogurt compared to 13 grams of protein per 1 cup of regular yogurt.

It goes through an extra straining process so all the whey gets drained out and it stays thick and fresher longer than regular yogurt.

  • It has less sugar as well.....I have it every morning for breakfast because it keeps me full longer than regular yogurt would....however the price is quite high....
  • It is thicker, tangier, and has less sugar (generally).  I also heard, and haven't researched it myself, that because the cultures are slightly different than "regular" yogurt, it is significantly lactose reduced because the different cultures break down the lactose normally present.  Take it for what its worth, I haven't checked it out personally.
  • to me, it's creamier, smoother, tangier (i add honey or fresh sliced fruit to mine) and a better option for me since it's loaded with protein.

i buy the Fage 0% plain in the largest available containers (35 oz) at whole foods and it's about $6.50 on sale. that lasts me a week or more.

Yoplait has HFCS and so does Dannon Fruit on the Bottom so stay away from those.

Old Home has some decent All Natural yogurts if you're looking to head the healthier direction but don't want to fork over for the greek.

  • It has twice as much protein since they have to use twice as much milk because it's strained so much.

Plain Greek yogurt taste like sour cream to me. I like using it in cooking and marinades, but not eating it plain (or with fruit in it).

  • I like it for the reduced sugar and the high amount of protein.

I really like the Chobani brand - Strawberry, Peach and Blueberry are all good.

Because it's the straining process (I think that's why) it's thicker than the usual yogurt so it might take you a few tries to get used to it.

  •  I eat Greek yogurt everyday.  I can pretty much quote prices for most brands at local stores.  I am always looking for a deal!

I like Greek for it's protein content and natural ingredients (don't bother with Dannon or Yoplait - not natural and totally nasty tasting)

Plain Greek is going to be an acquired taste.  Depending on the brand of course.  Some are better then others.  Fage 0% is the best in my opinion.  For flavored, Oikos and Chobani vanilla are best.  I get my Fage at Super Target now - best price I have found.  We also get a 12 pack of fruit flavored Chobani (all natural, fruit on the bottom) at Costco for about $.84 a cup.

Most expensive place to buy is at Cub (Most of their organic or natural food is though).

I wrote an article/review back in March about Greek yogurt on my blog.  The prices are mostly accurate, but like I said Super Target now has the best price for the 2 cup size container of Fage.

  • Thicker and creamier.  More protein, less fat.  The Yoplait (sp?) that I used to buy was 4g and the Chaboni I now buy has 15g, I think.  Yoplait also has greek, which has 12g.

I love the stuff.  Add that and some Kashi granola and its practically a meal.  I work overnights, so I don't want to eat a full meal since I eat during the day and it is perfect!

  • I love it too. I buy the Fage containers with the honey attached & portioned out. It's spendier, but worth it for the easy factor.
