Let's chat about the "Kindle": opinions, good or bad?

I have heard about it for a few years now, but the thought of reading a book on what basically is a computer screen didn't appeal to me at all...that is until I got my new phone (a Droid)...

My co-worker had been raving about this Kindle, and how she wanted to get one for Christmas, and I kind of "half listened". But to my surprise, there was a kindle app on my new droid phone, and so I decided to give it a go...

I just finished my first book - it is really cool to be able to read a book on your phone, let me tell you - and I must say I liked it more than I thought I would! I bought Jennifer Weiner's "Best Friends Forever" on kindle and that is my next read. I also bought "The Pilars of the Earth"...I am very much thinking that I may add a regular sized kindle to my Chirstmas list...anyone else try it out? Would like to? Opinions either way??

  • I like the idea, but like you, I'm not sure how I would like it. That's encouraging that you liked it more then you thought you would. I like the idea of being able to buy pretty much any book without a trip to the store.

  • Kryssttle: I have to admit, at first it was a little different, but you know how sometimes you are reading a book and it is so good that you want to sneak a read whenever you get a free moment? With a regular book, that may not always be easily managed, especially at work...but now I find I can actually sneak a quick read during down time at work, without it being obvious that I'm reading...

Now, with the full size kindle, I still wouldn't be able to do that, so if I get one, it would mostly be for home or vacations...I'm still loving my kindle app on my phone for everyday on the go reading...

  • It definitely does take some getting used to. DH bought me an Ipad for my birthday over the summer, and I have the Kindle App as well as the Nook App (that way if a book is on sale I can get it from either store).

I still enjoy buying actual books (especially poolside or at the beach where I am afraid the electronics will get wet), but the options are endless for books and you don't have to wait for your next trip to the book store. Also, it saves a ton of space that I really don't have at the moment.

The regular sized kindle will be much easier to read on than your phone, I am sure you will be addicted in no time!

  • I've heard about the Nook also - in your opinion is it better than the Kindle? or comparable?

I think it is pretty comparable. I know that they came out with the new "economical" kindle, which I am sure is a great option especially for the price.

  • I have a Nook and I absolutely LOVE it. I thought I would not like it at first because I like reading an actual book, but I never want to buy a book again!

E-books are generally cheaper than regular books

If you have a Nook you can lend certain books out

You can "borrow" books from the library and transfer them to your Nook (Not sure if you can do that with Kindle)

I like being able to hold my Nook with one (or none!) hands no matter where I am. It gets awkward trying to holod a book and turning the pages.

I prefer the Nook - It's compatible with the program my library uses so I can "borrow" books. Nook also has a Lend Me feature that is still in Beta I believe but basically you can lend out books that you have to one other person. It's how I read all the Sookie Stackhouse books!

I also don't like the keyboard on the Kindle, I think it looks ugly. I personally think the Nook is prettier with the touchscreen.

  • Thanks, Ladies! This is just what I am looking for...

@Mandah - I've been looking around online, and have come across many who share your enthusiasm for the Nook...I think I am going to ask for one for Christmas from Hubbs...Thanks so much :-)

I also put out an opinion poll on  my FB page...interested to see what other comments may come in! I think I'll download the Nook app to my droid and try that out for a while...but I have to give credit to kindle for helping me to see that I can like reading in this e-format!

  • I've asked for that as my holiday present this year too.  To me reading from a Kindle/Nook seems much better than reading from a paper book. Plus I do a lot of long business trips to foreign countries and it would be nice to only have to drag one device with me instead of a few books taking up space in my luggage. Not to mention they are closing all of the friggen book stores in my area so I mostly order from Amazon, and I'm tired of waiting a week to get a book I want to read. I'm DYING for one.

My issue is, in doing my research I think the Kindle is the better option for me. The new version they just released has better reviews than the Nook (at least until the Nook one-ups it and comes out with a new version). Plus I'm a huge fan of Amazon, less so B&N.

But, everyone in my family likes to read and we're always swapping books back and forth. My sisters got upset when I talked about getting a Kindle since we won't be able to do that anymore. They want me to wait until Kindle comes out with a version where you can share books (which is bound to happen so they can compete with the Nook) or until some improvements are made on the Nook. They want us all to have the same system, which makes sense. Of course the problem is that I want one NOW, and I have a feeling my sisters each won't get one until next year at the earliest. I'm afraid it's like the IPod where as soon as you buy one, a better version comes out. What to do, what to do...
