He's got six weeks off after taking his first board exam and he wants to get a temporary retail job for the holiday season. I'm cool with that, but the application for Borders asked him how much he wanted to make. He said 8 to 10 but he told me he was hoping for 12.
$12 and hour? For temporary seasonal work? HAHAHAHAHA, not going to happen buddy, but he just won't believe me. He says his last job (which was at a laser lab that also worked with nuclear technology or something fancy like that) was $11.50 an hour part time (this was in college). He says now he has half a professional degree and should be paid more.
But it's temporary seasonal retail work. I cannot believe how unrealistic he's being about this. I'm a freakin' key (aka "Floor Manager") and I only make $8.25. Wooboy.

Re: My husband is in.sane.
LOL. I hate to say it, but if anything they're going to look at his education and be like - wow, you're way over educated for this! I hope he gets it and isn't seriously disappointed when they tell him they'll pay like $8.00...
I could not find a job in retail to save my life with my degree.
This! It's so true...when people see that you have an education they kind of look at your application and think you're way to overqualified and don't want to consider you. It gets worse with the more education you have too...
He's never worked retail before and I think it's an experience everyone should try. It gives you a lot more patience as a customer. Anyway, it seems more likely to me that they'd want to pay him minimum wage, which is 7.25 here. He was working on app last night online and was going to submit it today; I'll let you know what happens!
There are probably hundreds if not low thousands of people looking for seasonal work around here this year, and H thinks he can negotiate pay, but with all those extra people who are willing to take minimum, I think they might not give him the job if he thinks he can negotiate.

i agree with this. it's a catch 22. i only negotiated a retail salary once-and it did not work in my favor at all (it was a mgmt position). there are just so many people willing and able to work retail that they don't really need to bother negotiating with anyone...because right behind them is someone that will do the job for the offering salary.
though i've never had a problem getting a retail job with my education. course, it isn't like i hand them my resume. i fill out the app. i also have 13 yrs of retail experience, so i guess that tends to outshine my stupid degree.
I worked seasonally at a garden nursery during university and in my third year I finally got a raise to $9/hr. And this was in Canada where the government chipped in about $4 of that 9 as an incentive for the company to hire students. I would be shocked if they offer him more than $10, but one can always hope.
I agree that everyone should work retail at some point in their lives. In some ways it made me more patient but in other ways it made me less patient! My experience taught me to see the difference between an employee who is really busy and is trying his/her best and an employee who is just incompetent.
