Stopping your period with the pill...

Kind of a dumb question but I want to make sure I'm doing this right!

Next month my period comes about the same time we leave for our Mexico trip.  I'm on the pill, if I just go straight from one months pills to the next without taking the 7days off in between, this will stop that period that would take place during the 7days 'normal no pill time" correct?

Re: Stopping your period with the pill...

  • Yes. You can do that to skip that period, but you will most likely have some spotting or light breakthrough bleeding for a few days.

awesome thanks, I have super light periods as it is so a little spotting won't bug me too much....but I will make a note to save the white bathing suit for the end of the trip now!

I did this a handful of times but it seemed like I had a very light period (more than spotting) all the time. It really sucked! I've heard (from doctors on NPR) that it's perfectly healthy to do this but some women just spot more than others.

  • I've always wondered if we could do this and I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one who has thought of this.

  •   Works better with monophasic pills than with triphasic pills. Some of the girls on the swim team only had four periods a year.
  • I did this for my wedding & honeymoon.  I actually planned ahead and skipped it 2 months before so it worked out that my period would come after the honeymoon plus my body would adjust itself & I had not spotting.  I was also on Ortho-Tricyclen which has different levels in each week.  I went from week 3, to week 1 in a new pack.  Worked out great
  • Thank you for asking this!  I've always wondered.

  • I did this to avoid my period on my honeymoon, and it was fine, but I did have spotting for that week. The only issue I had was with my insurance: in order to pick my prescription up a week earlier, I had to have my doctor call the pharmacy and actually change my prescription.
  • PP is right about insurance....you might have to pay for it out of pocket.  If you have generic though it should only be $15 tops.  Or atleast mine was & I was on a generic of Ortho tricyclen

This isn't a problem where I am.  I pick up 3 months worth of pills at a time and they don't care if you pick it up a little earlier if need be. The prescriptions always set up to last you a year as it is.
