BCP that let you skip your period?

Hi ladies,

I'm currently on Seasonique, which allows you to get your period once every three months. I started taking it due to daily pain due to endometriosis, plus severely painful menstrual cramps, to the point where I was completely debilitated for two days out of five while on my period.

Anyhoo, the new pill has done wonders in terms of reducing (nearly eliminating) my daily pain, and not having a period is awesome. However, I now have constant, all day nausea (yes, I have POAS, got a BFN), and I can no longer wear my contact lenses. I just had my eyes checked a couple weeks ago, picked up my new contacts, and they hurt my eyes. This is the same brand of contacts I always use, just an updated prescription. My vision was also very blurry and quite reduced. I do not have these problems when I wear my glasses, only the contacts.

I called my OBGYN, and the nurse told me that there was no other pill that lets you skip your period, and also told me that it was absolutely impossible that my BCP could be causing my issues with my contacts, even though it is listed on the list of possible side effects. She said they just put that in there as a possibility, but it's not true that BCP's affect your vision. Confused I think she's an idiot, but whatever. The vision problems did not occur on the pill I was taking previously.

Long story short, are any of you on a pill that allows you to skip your period? If so, what brand? I was previously taking a triphasic pill, that would not allow me to skip my period, it came on anyway even if I took the pills continuously.

TIA!

Re: BCP that let you skip your period?

  • You should talk to your doctor..don't take the nurse's opinion.  But I used to do this before seasonqiue as on the market with other forms of BCP's a while back.  Its the same thing, just take 3 packs, don't use the week at the end.  I ended up stopping this since it caused issues with my body.  Not sure the brand..but it was very generic..most brands can do that.

  • I took Seasonale quite a few years ago, and it made me extremely nauseated.  I had to stop taking them.  Instead my doctor just put my on a regular BCP, and I skipped the placebo week.  I did that for several years (before stopping to TTC).  I only had a period once a year or less.  I LOVED it!
  • You can take regular BCP and skip your period too. Its easier with POPs (progesterone only, no estrogen, aka the mini pill) because they have the same amount of hormones in every pill.

Tri-phasic combo (estrogen and progesterone) pills are harder because each week's pills contain different levels of hormones; so while its not impossible its a huge pain in the ass to figure it out.

With POPs you ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO take the pill at the same time every day (within one hour at least) or the efficacy is reduced.

That being said, I've been on POPs for about 7 years, take it the same time every day, never had an oops or scare and have skipped my last 3 periods easily by simply not taking the placebo pills and starting a new pack right away.

THAT being said, talk to your doctor. Always.

  • Thanks so much everyone!

Since my last pills were triphasic, I think that's the reason why skipping the placebos did not work. I called my doctor office back and demanded that they leave a message for the doctor herself to call me back, and they promised they would.

I think I will ask her about trying something that is not triphasic to see if that helps.

SCC, I thought about POP's, but I really don't think I could remember to take it exactly the same time, and there is no way I want a bun in this oven right now, so it might be a little too risky for me. :) Thanks though!

  • I have an alarm on my phone set for 7pm everyday and I've never missed taking it. It really isn't that hard.

Ah. Well, I'm in school at night after work, and my schedule varies by day, so I don't really feel comfortable taking the chance. I take my pill every morning when I brush my teeth, so it's around the same time every day, except for sleeping in on weekends. I don't want to give up my sleeping in just to take my pill. :)

  • I also go to school some evening.  I just set my phone on vibrate for those nights, keep it where I can see it or in my lap so I can feel it, and take it in class.

Yes, I suppose I could do that. It just makes me really nervous that one hour could make the difference between pregnancy or not.

  • i've been on yasmin (and now the generic, ocella) for 8 years and i love it.  i don't have any side effects and i can skip my period whenever i feel like it without any issue.  i'd definitely ask your doctor about it.

    ...hello out there!

  • I know you posted this a few days ago, but I've been using Lo Estrin 24 for almost three years now and I've only had my period around 7-10 times (very light; almost like not having one). Before this BCP I was on about a dozen others because after only a few months of using them my extreme cramps/bleeding would start when I got my period.

When I first started I had a very light period and since then I've only had very very light spotting or slightly heavy spotting. This pill prevents your body from building the lining in the uterus (which I obviously don't need). It's also different because you take 24 days of active pills and only 3 days of inactive.

Some women still get a monthly period, but it gets light, and sometimes stops, over time.

I must day that it is very expensive since there is no generic and most insurances don't cover it. Luckily my doctor gives me free samples, but I also have a card where the BC company will cover what my insurance doesn't and I only pay $24 a month (Sometimes the cost can be around $75).

The best thing is to just ask your doctor and see what they think is best for you.

  • thanks for the comment about not being able to wear your contacts.  i take the same thing and could not figure out why i was having issues wearing my contacts.  i would recommend not wearing them because i have gotten three eye infections in two years from my eyes being so dry.
