Not having a moldy mildewy sponge?
How do you do it? Is this even possible? I already rinse it and squeeze it as dry as possible when I'm done using it but it always starts to smell within a few days of getting a new one even when it still looks clean. Am I using the wrong brand or kind or something? How do I actually keep it clean?

Ideally, use something you can wash. Dish rags are good; I use Dobie pads. At the end of the night, I just rinse it thoroughly, squeeze it hard, and set it aside to dry until I wash towels.
When I was unofficially in charge of the staff kitchen at my old workplace, I would microwave the (wet) sponge a few times a week, which is supposed to help with germs. (Keep an eye on it though...I have heard of them igniting!)
I've also heard of people boiling their sponges or putting them through the dishwasher.
I'm starting to think the washcloth is the way to go. Thanks for the tip!
I tried the dishwasher (my aunt suggested that) it didn't help. Perhaps my sponges are not a good brand?

I notice a major problem with smells and mildew when I leave the sponge anywhere near my sink. I tend to rinse it well with the hottest water I can stand, squeeze out as much water as I can, and then leave it on my window sill. The sun dries it out very well (it ends up looking like a wafer).
When I was a kid, we always used white wash cloths or torn up dish towels. They'd get tossed in with the bleach load to clean and disinfect them. That method creeps my husband out. I'm not sure why. So, I stick with the sponge.
This is what I do. Once I start smelling that icky smell, I pop in the micro for a minute. I'd make sure it was wet though. Let it sit for a few seconds and take it out. Smelled like hot dish soap. HTH!
