How/where do you store potatoes and onions?

I have mine in a lower cupboard that is next to the oven, probably not the best place.

Where do you store them and what do you put them in.....how long should they last?

Thanks!

Re: How/where do you store potatoes and onions?

  • I keep my onions in a bowl on the counter (with our garlic too)- we go through them pretty fast so I have no idea how long they are supposed to last.  I keep potatoes in the top shelf of one of our cabinets either in the bag they come in or loose if I just buy a few.  Whatever you do don't store onions and potatoes together- the onions will make anything near them ripen and/or rot.

  • Onions in a bowl on our counter, potatoes in the bag on the floor of our pantry. I think each lasts a couple weeks, onions might be more than potatoes...maybe. Obviously I have no clue.

  • We keep ours in our root cellar.  Our house was built in 1940 and has a creepy weird root cellar.  But it's great for storage!  DH keeps stock of everything in there.  It also has shelves where we keep our canned stuff.  Our potatoes and onions will last a couple of months down there.
  • Anytime except summer I keep potatoes in the garage.  The rest of the time they're in the hall closet or pantry if there's room. I usually only buy one or two onions at a time, and we go through them quickly, so they live on top of the fridge until they get used.

I had no idea! That could be 1/2 my problem, that combined with the heat from the oven....lol

    Thanks!
