Re: Just Released CPSC and FDA say stop using sleep positioners

  • We used one with TJ when he was little. We never had a problem with it and stopped at 3 months I think. We talked to the doctor about it because of the acid reflux and the vomiting, we didn't want him on his back. We put him in it on his side and just made sure that the side pieces were really close to him so he was tight in there. They told us he was fine in it. We stopped using it once he started really moving around in his crib. I understand the need for the warning, but it really worked for us Tongue Tied

  • I believe it states in there to only use it if a doctor specifies it is necessary for reflux.

I never used one.  It is scary to think that the exact things parents use to keep kids on their back to prevent infant death is causing it.  Sometimes I wonder about these contraptions they come up with.  Davis slept on his belly from the age of 4 weeks on, he just slept better that way.  While I think "back to sleep" is a good thing, I feel that parents are so freaked out by all the hoopla associated with it that they will do anything to keep kids on their backs and that is what is scary to me.  Davis didn't sleep well on his back and I had to get over all the warnings and scare tactics associated with belly sleeping.

  • TJ was always a side sleeper. In fact he just recently started moving to his belly. He never stays that way and will move from side to belly to other side and back but I just let him go now.

  • This just got released?  I have heard for  years, since I was pregnant with KP way back, that nothing goes in the crib but the baby....no blanket (unless it's wearable), no sleep positioner, etc.

I'm not sure sleep positioner was on that list, but it very well could be.  I always felt like they looked unsafe and never would have used one.  But so many parents are so afraid of not having their baby sleep on their back that they use them.  I have heard of many people who can't get their kids to sleep on their backs that resort to the positioner.  I really hope people do stop using them unless medically necessary.
