That poor guy - I know you're done with Joe the Plumber but

That poor man suddenly becomes national news and every single piece of his life is dissected (see other board). I bet he's wishing he never opened his mouth now.

  • I feel bad for him, too. Even if he's woefully uninformed about taxes. :)

  • He's woefully uninformed? He sounds more informed and articulate on tax structures than either presidential candidate. I just watched that video of his GMA interview and wanted to reach through the screen and give him a hug.

I do feel really badly about the media anal exam he's about to get (if he hasn't gotten already).

  • Well, he's either uninformed or just negligent since he's being sued for non-payment. http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&sid=ak7GnW2GiKF4&refer=home

Don't get me wrong - people screw up on their taxes - our tax code is a nightmare.  But the MPC should have done their homework about this before they thrust the guy into the national spotlight.

Well, considering he doesn't seem to know what is required of him to be a plumber, I'd say he seems uninformed.

Legally speaking, Wurzelbacher isn?t a plumber, because he isn?t licensed by Toledo, Lucas County or the state of Ohio. A representative of the Toledo Building Inspection Division said a plumber must be registered with the state and only then can apply for a city plumbing contractor?s license.

Wurzelbacher said he worked under the license held by his boss, Al Newell of Newell Plumbing and Heating Co. of Toledo. Newell is a licensed plumbing contractor in Toledo, records show. But anyone working under Newell should have a journeyman?s plumbing license or an apprenticeship license, officials said.

He also doesn't seem to know how much the business he wants to buy is worth or how Obama's proposal would apply to him:

Even if he did buy Newell Plumbing and Heating, Obama?s tax plan wouldn?t affect him. While Wurzelbacher told Obama that the business would be taxed at a higher rate because it grossed more than $250,000 a year, Ohio business records show the company?s estimated total annual revenue as only $100,000.

    .....

Analysts calculated that the extra tax would amount to $900, which would likely be more than offset by separate provisions of Obama?s plan: a 50 percent tax credit for health care and elimination of the capital gains tax for small businesses.

  • McCain didn't trust this guy in the spotlight, Obama thrusted him in the spotlight when he answered the guy's question saying "spread the wealth around." If Obama hadn't gaffed this guy would be invisible like the rest of us.

I thought you meant he was uninformed about fiscal policy, but you meant individual income taxes (or property taxes, which is what this lien is probably for). I meant he knows why high taxes are bad from a macro perspective and can articulate it better than either of the 2 presidential candidates.

ETA: I love watching this guy. This guy is getting torn apart for no other reason than his question managed to boost McCain's campaign. He's taking it like a champ I think he's awesome. I might go buy a Joe the Plumber tshirt or something.

OK, let's cut the crap and be fair. BOTH people put the dude in the spotlight. Obama had a conversation with him, and McCain jumped on the response. Both men talked about him during the debate. Obama mentioned him 4 times. McCain mentioned him 21 times.

Really?  It's Obama's fault?  I call BS on that, I'm sorry.  If McCain had not mentioned him last night there is no way we would be talking about him.  We talked about him on Tuesday when the youtube video first aired, but there was zilch about him in the press or on these boards yesterday - until McCain opened his mouth about him.

I'm glad the McCain camp is rallying around him - maybe the sales of those t-shirts will subsize the legal fees that might result in dealing with his tax debt and lack of licensing now.

Right but the reason this guy was thrust in the spotlight is b/c of Obama's horrible answer to him! Obama said something socialist. If that had never happened neither would Joe's 15 seconds of fame. Obviously McCain is going to bring that up b/c Obama's "spread the wealth around" was a softball waiting to be knocked out of the park. Before that though the video/soundbytes of this guy's Q&A with Obama were everywhere. He was famous before the debate.

I don't judge what goes on in the media by what gets posted on this board. That Q&A was a disaster for Obama so I'm not surprised a super liberal board wanted nothing to do with it. I heard it on every talk radio show I listen to. It's all over the internet, there are email forwards about it and it's obviously popular on youtube. I completely disagree that he wasn't famous until McCain brought him up. And I still maintain there would have been nothing to bring up had Obama not turned socialist in his answer.

  • Got it.  So whenever McCain makes a bad decision, it's because Obama made him do it?  OK.

Yeah, if McCain hadn't mentioned him nearly 2 dozen times during the debate, I just don't see the interest in him continuing into today. He's still the lead story on msnbc.com! Certainly his conversation with Obama would have gotten some coverage, but I just don't see it continuing without McCain's help. And don't forget that McCain didn't just focus on the "spread the wealth" around part. He continued to refer specifically to Joe's situation, which is why the situation was investigated. By the end of the debate, he referred to JtP as his "old buddy." Uhh, yeah.

  • This guy is basically being villified by the left because he caused Obama to finally say what he actually planned to do all along - redistribution of wealth.

That is a core difference between Dems and Reps.

Yup - Obama, opened his mouth and actually spoke the truth and now Obama  is being challenged on this position.

  • When I said Joe was woefully uninformed, I meant that he doesn't understand how the candidate's tax plans would personally affect him. He thinks he knows, but the facts have shown that his interpretation is incorrect. I won't re-post the links that others have already posted in this thread. Obama's tax plan isn't going to put him in the poor house.

And if the average plumber makes $250k a year, then I went into the wrong line of work. I need to add "plumber" to my list of future career options. Right now it's #2 behind "AIG executive."

  • Come on, people. We all know none of this would have happened if Obama had agreed to a series of town hall meetings.

Of course.  It's all Obama's fault.  He MADE McCain mention Joe over 20 times.  He didn't want to, but had to because POW.

So McCain couldnt have referenced the quote without mentioned Joe the Plumbers real first and last names? That would have been impossible?

If you want to debate this so called "Wealth Distribution" we can, but I just didnt think that this thread was about that. I thought it was about this man being thrust into the spot light. Which, I am sorry, is not Obama's fault.

In fact, I am not convinced this man wasnt a plant by the McCain campaign at the Obama rally, considering he was apparently a life long republican. I am not one to usually buy into these weird theories, but it seems plausable to me.

Core difference? As far as I can tell, McCain is not proposing that we scrap progressive taxation. Only a few candidates from the primaries (both Democrat & Republican) come to mind who have proposed a significantly different system of taxation.
