Jury Duty Question?

DH was summoned for Jury Duty.  He gets paid per car he fixes so if he doesn't work - he doesn't get paid.  We really can't afford for him to not be at work.  Does anyone know how this works?  This would really screw us financially if he had to take time off.

Re: Jury Duty Question?

  • my husband was called last week- same thing, he's commision so has to be at work to make $$. He registered online and then ended up having to go in Monday. He said that while they were asking questions "would you have a problem if... do you have an issue with..." one lady in the front row raised her hand every single time. he said after an hour the judge told her' You obviously don't want to be here so lets not waste either of our time go ahead and leave".

I was like, dang- you should have been doing that! The case did have some big things my husband had problems with so he wasn't picked after all...

  • oh and a hint- tell him to park at a meter and not put money in it. They don't tell you this beforehand but if they give you a letter that day and if you mail the ticket in with the letter the same week as your jury duty the court dismisses it.

I don't think this is quite accurate. When I went for jury duty downtown earlier this year, I recall getting an email or being specifically notified before my date that there was no public parking and to arrange to take the bus or be dropped off.

How soon you are dismissed may depend on the judge you get. We were there from 1 to almost 7 and there was a guy that was so adamant about leaving right then that the judge threatened him a few times to get him to settle down. Annoying guy wasn't picked, but the judge made sure to keep him as long as everyone else.

  • I agree with Chicklit. Being annoying to the judge will backfire on you.

I was called this year, and in the end it was completely cancelled.

You can call the court clerk and get a waiver, usually. You can also usually get dismissed due to financial hardship, if you are self employed.
