Well this sucks...

I'm sitting in the ER. :( My youngest brother got a concussion (a pretty severe one) during an intramural flag football game today. I came to sit with him so my mom could go home and shower and grab stuff - they're keeping him overnight.

Please just send some T&P our way if you can...

Re: Well this sucks...

  • Wow - that must be pretty scary. T & P for your family.

  • How's he looking this morning? Hopefully no scares during the night.

  • This was a long 24 hours.

Okay, so here's the part I heard about second/third hand:

My brother was playing flag football. Someone was running after him and he got pushed. As he was falling, he was kneed in the head by another player, and then hit the ground head first. He was apparently knocked out and on the ground for about 30 seconds. They took him over to the local Kaiser office. When my mom and my grandpa arrived, he was so out of it he didn't even know who they were. They did a CT scan and transferred him to the ER. He began to gain more awareness (and figured out who my mom was) as the evening progressed, but he was throwing up quite a bit, so they decided to admit him.

When I arrived, my mom left for a bit to go home, shower, and get stuff for the night. I was the only one with him. He threw up once more, so they gave him a different medication. Well, that didn't work -- in fact, he had a bad psychological reaction to it. He started screaming about how hot it was and how his whole body was in pain. The nurse came in and gave him Benadryl to calm him down (at this point, I'm a nervous wreck because there's nothing I could do...). The nurse explained that some people react badly to that medication, but it's the strongest/best anti-nauseau stuff they could give. Ugh.

Anyway, by the time my mom got back, they'd moved him up to the neuro floor. I went home to sleep (which was difficult) and came back in the morning. By the time I got back, he was still a bit groggy but mostly back to normal. They discharged him late morning, and by then, he was back to normal. I took him to lunch at Jack in the Box and then brought him home. He went to sleep right away (they said it was fine for him to sleep, that rest was the best thing).

The CT scan was normal (no bleeding or bruising or swelling). They said it was obviously a severe concussion but that with sleep, rest, and Tylenol, he should be better in a few days.

  • Glad to hear he's doing better. I would have probably been a wreck too if I heard my sisters scream in pain.

  • Aw, C, that sounds awful. I'm glad he's doing better. T&P for a speedy recovery!

  • That ordeal sounds terrifying and I would have been a wreck if it were my brother. Lots of T&Ps to you, your family and especially your brother!

  • Oh, my gosh!  How scary!  Glad things are better but I'll send some belated T&P anyway.
