Can I ask a possibly TMI question?

Ok ladies, so DH & I have been talking about TTC after I graduate. We're super excited about being at that stage in our lives.

This month, I was close to two weeks late on my period. I was having bad headaches, backaches, sore boobs, and was really, really, really pissyy which is NOT normal for me. I was getting excited, but didn't say anything to anyone because I didn't want to get anyone too excited until I knew for sure. Here's the TMI part:

Yesterday morning, I woke up early to take a pregnancy test. When I got out of bed, I was super light-headed and noticed blood on the sheets where I had been. I stood up and blood was running down my leg. I felt so sick and ran to the bathroom. I have no idea if this is for sure my period because it's soooo heavy and I'm passing a lot of large clots (I'm sorry for the TMI details!!!). I'm having the worst cramps I have ever had. It's so bad that I had to go out and buy the super maxi pads (the diaper-feelin' ones) and on average have had to change them at least once every two or three hours. It's that heavy, yall.

I'm not on BC anymore; haven't been since about April. I have had a normal period since then up until now. All of them have only lasted about three days and have been super light with hardly any clots.

I'm not an idiot, I know what my period is normally. But could it be like this because I was late? Or do you think it could be a possible miscarriage? I know I should have called my doctor by now but I have had zero time to call. If it's still like this by Monday I plan on calling. What do you think?

  • My first thought is that it might be a miscarriage. I'd call your doc as soon as possible and get a professional take on things. If it were me, I'd want to know for sure.

  • I was going to say the same thing. It sounds like a miscarriage. I'm sorry you're going through that. I would call your dr. and get checked out.
  • I think that you definitely need to call your doctor if you have any doubts in your mind.

With that being said, I have been wearing pads for the past two cycles to see if it helps my endo.  I have noticed that I feel like I bleed heavier using the pads than I did when I used tampons.  When I wipe, there will be large clots on the toilet paper and in the toilet.  So much so that last cycle I called my mom and this cycle I made Drew come look.  It usually only lasts a day, maybe two, where it's heavy like that.  It depends on when my period starts.  I plan on asking the doctor when I go for my testing on Wednesday what is normal and what is cause for alarm.

I think you should call your doc.  If nothing else, it will give you piece of mind.

  • Thanks, you guys. It's really been weighing on my mind all day and it makes me wonder. Back in January I had something similar to this but I was about 3 weeks late. I was still on BC but had also been on antibiotics for an upper respiratory infection which can cause the BC not to be as effective. I called my doctor's office and they told me that he was out of town for the next two weeks and that they didn't think it would matter if I came for a visit anyway because "there's no way I could be pregnant because of the BC" and even if I were having a miscarriage then that there was nothing they could do for me now. They wouldn't even schedule me in. I'm afraid I'm gonna call again and have them tell me the same thing...that it's too late to do anything anyway. I dunno. I'm just super torn up about this...

  • I would call your doc and if they say the same thing as last time about "nothing they can do for you now..." I would find a new doc!

First, if that was the case 2 of my friends wouldn't have kids. That is a complete lie because it's only 99 % effective and like you said your antibotics would not have been as effective.

I'm really sorry you are going through this. If you are still cramping and bleeding I would definately go to the ER, or an immediate care center.

When you called your dr's office did you just talk to a nurse or a Dr? If it was a nurse, I would call back after hours and they should have an answering service and have them page the Dr. on call. If I was in your position I would just want a peice of mind.

  • I also think you should get a new Dr.

Health care at it's best. It pisses me off they wouldn't even schedule you for an appointment. I would call and talk to someone else and just make an appointment and say you are having problems. Don't go into details.

  • The same thIng happened to me back in high school.  After a day or 2 it went to a normal flow. There is a chance it could be a miscarriage but it maybe too soon to tell even at the point if it truly was one.  I say if it doesn't become more normal in a day or 2 then call your doctor.  Also, I know a few girls who got pregnant on the Pill - me included.

  • I would call your OB/GYN, not your dr -- first, b/c your dr's office is apparently staffed by douchbags; second, b/c your OB will know more about how to handle the situation anyway.

It sounds like you want to know if this is a m/c, and I don't blame you. I would've wanted to know in January, too, b/c if this is your second m/c, that's a really important thing to know about your body! Your OB can order beta tests to find out if you're pg, and I would think would order an ultrasound to see what's going on -- if you are pg, it could be something that I can't remember the name of ... a cyst? I can't remember. But there's something that can make you bleed in early pg but isn't a m/c.

Wait -- did you POAS? What did it do?

  • I hope you get some answers and that its just a really bad period Autumn :(.

  • since this is atypical, I'd definitely try and be seen by your OB/GYN.  It may or may not be a miscarriage.  I have a history of passing clots when I have a period...though not regularly, but it has happened.  But definitely something that should get checked out.
