stinky front loading washer

How can I get the yucky mildew-ey smell out of my washer.  Being pregnant, it makes me throw up.

I thought DH did something with it last weekend, but he never opened the door to let it air out, and now the smell is way worse than it ever was.

Do I use bleach or vinegar?  (I've read either works, just wondering which is better)

Re: stinky front loading washer

  • Mine has a clean cycle that I run with vinegar every once in a while.  We try to leave the door open, but DD likes to close doors and we don't always notice when she gets the washer.

  • do you put the vinegar in the soap tray or just inside of the washer (wouldn't it just drain right out if you put it in the drum?)
  • I usually just put a cup of vinegar in the soap tray and run it on hot.  You can also buy Tide Front Loader cleaner in the laundry aisle if vinegar doesn't get the job done.
  • thanks!

I just ran it with a cup of vinegar on hot and it helped enough.  I was then able to wipe out the rubber ring with a mixture of vinegar and hot water.  There was some nasty build-up in there (from my husbands work clothes).  Hopefully DS will leave the door open and I will run a cycle of vinegar every other month or so!

  • I use white vinegar and hot water, it really helps.
  • Our front loader gets like that every once in a while. When we bought our set they gave us a 3 month trial of this affresh washing machine cleaner stuff. It seems to work pretty well - you put a tablet in once a month (I do it every 1 1/2 - 2 months) and either put it on the washer's "cleaning" cycle or the normal cycle with the hotest water you can. I've seen it at Wal*Mart and such, but here's the website about it: http://www.affresh.com/content.jsp?pageName=where_to_buy

     ... just a thought! :)

  • Our owner's manual came with directions about how to keep the washer from smelling. I am not sure exactly what it said because we have only had it for a few weeks but if you still have your manual then that would help!
