*Doggie owners*

We took both the pups to the vet today, for their annual check up. The doctor says Ruby is getting to be overweight, and needs to lose some. Of course she recommends I change her food, to a low calorie food you can only get at their vet office (and it's extra expensive). Otherwise, she suggested cutting out treats (store bought kind) and replacing with baby carrots. She said they are good for their teeth and are healthy for them. Anyway, I had a bag of baby carrots already, so I gave them each one just now. They love them! Of course, the food they eat (Halo) has carrots in it, and I make treats with carrot, too, but I've never given just carrot to them before.

Has anyone else done this? I absolutely recommend replacing at least some of your dogs treats with carrot sticks or baby carrots.

  • Fenway doesn't like them. I think it's a texture thing. She chews on it for a second, and then sticks her nose in the air.  Brat. :)  I'm glad Ruby likes them, though!!

Haha, my dogs will eat anything.

  • How much does Ruby weigh? When Bailey got to 20.5 pounds the vet told us she had to lose some weight too. We cut back on snacks to once every other day and that made a difference. She's at 18.5 pounds now.

I'm sure we could give her baby carrots and she'd eat them. She already eats everything we drop on the floor.

Today, at the vet, Ruby weighed 22 lbs. She was up to 25 lbs this past spring, and lost those three or four lbs over the summer. The vet still thinks she needs to be under 20lbs.

  • Baby carrots are a great substitute. As a general rule, we give the dogs whatever fruits and veggies we're cutting at the time. Of course they don't get the toxic ones, though. Or lettuce...that's like giving them grass, and we all know what happens there.

  • Our dogs would eat a salad if you put it in front of them. They LOVE veggies. We give them carrots and sometimes grapes if they're just sitting there staring at us. I love carrots with peanut butter on them, so sometimes I'll just spread a thin amount on a carrot for them and it'll last a little longer.

  • The peanut butter on carrots sounds like a good, but messy, idea! Though grapes are bad for dogs, I am pretty sure. And raisins.

Yes.  Grapes and raisins are just as toxic (if not more) than chocolate.

Here is a list of things to avoid http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+1659&aid=1030

    Thanks for the carrot tip!

  • Thanks for the list, EHayes.  I didn't know about grapes and raisins, and I have been occasionally giving Nala a raw egg on top of her dry food.  I didn't know that it was bad for her.

We do this too. Jake's favorite are baby carrots though.
