**Flame**

Flame, this is totally off topic, but can you give me the contact information for NM state parks?  My brother is a hot shot in Utah, but is wanting to move back to NM to be closer to his GF.  He's been looking into law enforcement, but isn't too keen on it, and would rather have an outdoorsy type of job.  Also, is it a state or federal job?  I know this isn't your department, but I'd appreciate your help.  Thanks!

Re: **Flame**

  • The jobs are all state jobs. Although some are paid for through federal grants programs (they typically get called sponsored-term in state worker parlance). Job stuff has to go through the NM State Personel Office http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/Jobs.htm .

A lot of the ranger jobs require that you pass the State Law Enforcement Academy. But not all.  The main info for state parks is on the website ... http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/PRD/Contactus.htm . Let me talk to some of my friends in Parks and see if they can give me an actual name to put your brother in contact with. Maybe someone who can discuss different jobs that are possible...

By hot shot, you mean firefighter? Has he looked at NM State Forestry? http://www.emnrd.state.nm.us/FD/index.htm They're in my dept too! I think tehy just listed some jobs on the SPO website.

  • Thanks for the info!  I passed it on to my brother, and he's looking into it.  If you could get me some names, that would be great!  You're awesome!

Yes, he's a wildland firefighter, so that 3rd link you gave is very helpful.  He wants to stay employed as a firefighter, but since things are getting more serious with his girlfriend, he's tired of being gone 9 months out of the year.  Smile  So right now he's kind of looking for anything that will give him a little more stability.

    Thanks, Flame!  You're the best.

  • One of the nice things about NM State Forestry is that they all work fire crews or fire camps during the season. We actually joke that foresrty is where the wildland forest fire fighters go when the girlfriend becomes a wife. A bit more stable on the job front and you stay in NM....

He shoudl also look into the USFS offices here in ABQ. USFS moved thier main fiscal offices here a few years ago. But they also have a level 1 incident command team based here... http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/ I don't know much about getting hired by the SW Regional Team. But he can ask some of the incident command folks he meets on the job or his managers.

None of my friends in Parks were willing to have their name put out there, The whole state HR process is a bit screwy. And most of my firend are on the office side of things - architects and engineers for facilites, marketing, HR, admin, interpretive rangers.  I did talk to the main HR person. They're working on getting some jobs posted in teh next 2 months. She said she will tell me when they are to list. She may be willing to talk to your brother once thinsg actually list....

  • I passed on all the information.  Thanks so much for helping me/him out.

And yes, things are starting to get very serious between him and his gf, so your joke holds true.  Big Smile
