Would you buy this?

Since we all were just married, I thought you girls would be the perfect people to ask this question! I made personalized memory candles for our loved ones that had passed away for the wedding. Everyone at the wedding loved the candles, and I've had many people suggest I sell the candles.

At first, I didn't think it was a great idea, but they really don't take long to make and supplies are pretty cheap, too. It seems like it would be a pretty easy at-home business. It would be a nice way to bring in a little income while I am student teaching next semester. I was thinking possibly an Etsy shop and an eBay shop. Thoughts?? Would you buy this for your wedding?? How much would you pay?? Thanks for any insights ladies.

P.S. Please be brutally honest. I need to know what you guys honestly think.

The candles aren't lit here, so they don't look quite as neat as they do when they are lit.

Re: Would you buy this?

  • I think it's a really neat idea and that they look really good.  I don't think that I would personally buy them, but I would probably look into them.  I would not want to pay more than $15 per each candle.  Maybe $20, but I think that the price would be the issue...it would be something that would add to the cost of the wedding that could be easily excluded.  That being said, I think that there would definitely be people who would want to include them even if it was an additional cost.  Good luck if you decide to pursue this, and I think that they do look great!

  • I wouldnt buy them either, like PP said, its an expense that could easily be cut from a wedding. That being said I do think they are beautiful and many brides would love to use these candles. Also, have you thought about marketing them outside the wedding avenue? People might want them for memorials, funerals, etc.

I hadn't thought of that. Great idea, thank you!

  • I thought about the funeral/memorial avenue for you as well, but keep in mind that funerals need a really fast turn-around time.

Another good point, thanks! They really don't take very long to make as long as I have the supplies on hand, but that's definitely something to keep in mind. I also did my own unity candle, so that's another thing I might consider. I looked on Etsy and lots of people sell similar things. I suppose that's both good and bad.

  • As PPs said, I wouldn't personally buy them, but don't limit yourself to the wedding or even funeral/memorial avenue.  I would still put them up for sale, people I'm sure would be interested in just buying them for other occasions, eg. anniversary of death, possibly wedding, possibly funeral, anytime for a keepsake, etc.   I think it is a good idea and if you are up for it, try it!

  • They look really good--professional, even and honoring loved ones seems to be a common element of weddings these days.  Give it a try, I suppose--I don't know what the cost to sell on Etsy is or anything.

I wouldn't buy one, but we didn't have unity candles, either.  They just aren't my thing.

  • I would! I paid for a sign and individual name signs and the venue provided the candles, and I thought I'd put the candles in front of pictures of each person, but I never got around to putting up the pictures. I needed 9 signs, and I would have paid about $10-$15 for each.  People loved the detail at the wedding!  I almost bought a similar item, but the seller didn't have the pictures on the vellum (Is that what you're using?).  The pictures are a great touch!
  • I love them!, they are really professional looking. I think I'd give it a shot if I were you, why not? Make a business plan and go from there. Figure out what it costs to make, how much time, and how quick you could turn them over. See what your profit would be with selling different amounts of candles and see if you think it's worth it. If nothing else it's a chance to do something new. I'd buy them.

  • Thanks for all of the insight ladies! I'm going to look into the cost of selling on Etsy and see if it's worth it. I appreciate everyone's advice. Thanks again!
  • There are a lot of similar products like this on the market already. Honestly, I doubt you could make it worth you while. There are countless companies who will put your loved one's photo directly onto a candle, as well as numerous etsy stores that sell vellum wrapped vases just like yours- tight market.

Also, consider shipping. How much would it cost you to ship a vase like that?

I think you did a really great job, very pretty, but I don't think this alone is a viable business.
