waxing question

on a scale from 1 to Insanely Stupid, where would a girl who has never waxed anything (well, my eyebrows, 10 years ago) fall if she decided to get a full Brazilian wax?  And how long before leaving for vacation would you get it done?

we are leaving for our honeymoon (1.5 months after the wedding) this weekend, and I really think DH would enjoy it, I'm just scared (I'm such a wuss when it comes to pain!).  I'd kind of like to surprise him, so I was thinking if I do it on Friday I *might* be able to keep the secret for one day, we are flying out on Saturday...

Re: waxing question

  • I've never had a Brazilian done, but from what I've heard, it's nothing to play around with. IT WILL HURT. My guess is probably get it done at least a week ahead of time to reduce any swelling or discomfort, but I would check with a professional waxer (not sure if that's the correct term) and get their advice.

  • I've had a few of these.  Yes, they hurt...especially if you've never done it before.  You'll be tender/numb for the rest of the day and probably a bit into the next day.  Also, your hair needs to be long enough.  You can't exactly go in for a wax having shaved that day.  I usually let my hair grow for over a week.  Before my wedding/HM, I grew out for two weeks and got waxed the Tuesday before my Saturday wedding.  I'd suggest calling your local salon/spa places and asking them how long they'd recommend you grow out & if they were to wax you later in the week.  I'd recommend Thursday over Friday to give yourself an extra day of "recovery" before your HM.

  • DON"T DO IT!  I am a frequent waxer, but have only done brazilian a small handful of times. I thought it'd be a nice surprise for my hubby on our wedding night. Needless to say, it hurt, so incredibly painful, and it was sore/swollen for almost a week.  If you do it, time it right and you should either have a few aspirin or a glass of wine first.  I would suggest you just wax and leave a landing strip, trimmed short.  Sorry to be graphic, but you'll get the same effect with a lot less pain.
  • I got an "extended bikini wax" a few days before my wedding/honeymoon and I thought it was great. It wasn't a full brazilian, because the waxer left a small landing strip, but honestly, I didn't think the pain was that bad, and I have never been waxed before. I took 2 ibuprofins before I went, and the place I went to was really great.

The part that hurts the worst it the top of your pubic mound/front of your vulva (I am not sure how to describe it, but it's where the landing strip would be). The whole "undercarriage" and even the butt really didn't hurt that much at all. But I was very red and swollen afterwards for about 5 days, so I might plan on doing it a little further ahead of time than 1 day before you leave for the honeymoon.

  • OK then...shaving/trimming it is!

Maybe a bikini if I get around to it, but we'll see....

  • I had several...ok many Brazilians done over the years. Yes, it will hurt the first time (the more you have it done, the less it hurts). Try taking some sort of pain killer an hour before having the procedure. Also, ask if they have numbing spray. It doesn't numb the area 100% but it does help reduce the pain. I recommend having it done 2-3 days before you leave on your honeymoon. Hope this helps :-).
  • I only waxed once, a week before my wedding. It was a regular bikini wax, and I was sooo scared! Still, I was really surprised that it didn't really hurt. Uncomfortable, yes. Painful, not particularly.

Still, I might just be a special case. I'd say get a regular bikini wax to see how it goes, then work your way up to a brazilian later on.

  • It's really not that bad! The only waxes I've ever gotten are brazillians. Uncomfortable, yes, painful, no. Obviously the first time hurts more, but I would say that it at most, "smarts" as if you'd gotten slapped or something. Do not go to a place that uses wax that will adhere to your skin? you want someplace (I go to Bliss) where the wax sticks to your hair only, which will reduce the pain factor by a LOT. You could take a couple painkillers beforehand, but I never bother. Honestly, the most uncomfortable part is how much hotter the wax feels on the labia.

Since it's your first time, I'd recommend a day or two, but after that, you should be good to go a few hours later.

Believe me, once you do it, you'll be hooked :-)

  • I got my first Brazilian wax when I was 26 weeks pregnant, and forgot to take any tylenol beforehand. It hurt, but it wasn't unbearable. Yeah, it definitely hurts, but go for it. It's not that big of a deal. I was a little swollen for the first 2 days, but then it was just fine!

  • I'm going to disagree with the ladies who claim it is too painful to attempt.  It's really not that bad.  It smarts a little when the strip comes off.  That's it.

I do my own full Brazilian every six weeks or so and live to tell about it.

As in, you wax yourself? Explain please! I've been wanting to try it to save money, but I'm too chicken.

  •   Sugaring is less irritating than waxing.

Usually waxing the lips/labia isn't the problem. The tender area is the pubic mound above.

Maybe go bare down low and just trim the mound short?

Yep, it's a DIY project.  I buy the wax, strips and applicators at a beauty supply store.  I've been doing it for over a year and I can do it just as well as a professional for a heck of a lot cheaper.

A mirror helps until you get the hang of it.  Practice makes perfect.:)

I'm afraid that I'll do serious damage to myself. I'll see if I can work up the nerve. :-)

    This exactly.

I do my own as well (saves lots of $). I love 'em and so does the H :). Way better than shaving on so many levels

For first timers, just make sure you go to someone who is well trained and experienced. You may have to pay a little more, but totally worth it. That may be why some women are saying they were too painful...it probably wasn't done correctly.

  • Ditto on going somewhere that uses hard wax... it doesn't adhere to the skin.

My personal experience: I had never had a wax one time in my life, and I got a Brazillian the Thursday before my Saturday wedding.  It was ballsy, but I took a few Ibuprofen and relaxed and it wasn't that bad.  A few strips stung badly (the ones where the hair was the most dense), but as soon as the strip is off, the pain stops.  That said, I have a decently high tolerence for pain.  I also didn't swell or feel numb or anything.  By Friday, it felt very sexy actually.

I just had my second Brazillian done the other day and it hurt much, much less.  Maybe 25% of the hair had even grown back from the first one, so I plan to maintian this goodness :)

  • I would just go with a smaller wax...I did that prior to our honeymoon...a couple of days...give your skin time to adjust prior to the "fun" you will be having!

  • haha - thanks all, interesting set of opinions.

I may try it in the near future, but I dont't think I'm going to jepordize my vacation by doing it this week.

  • I know you've pretty much made up your mind, but I just wanted to add my 2 cents.

I've had a full brazilian once, and it wasn't that bad at all. Like most other people have said, the worst part is the pubic mound. My husband and I both loved it, and I would definitly recomend it as a surprise. I was waxed two days before my wedding, and I had no problem whatsoever with it except for the day of.

If you still have the opportunity, and are feeling frisky, I'd definitly recomend it.

  • maybe its me, I got a Brazilian a few days before me wedding. It was my first one, It hurt but it wasn't horrible. I was actually surprised that it didn't hurt as bad as I thought.

  • ok 1 to insanley stupid.... it is insanley stupid the first three times( and i never waxed anything, not even brows) then it gets easier each time!!! Although i though my little friend was ripped of a time or two heheheh.

My waxer told me she never had anyone curse at her the way i did.I kept saying *** tabitha, , and alot of uuuggghhh! but it was super smooth for a long time!  now i go in, spead em and im outie in 10-15 mins!

I think your hair should be about length of eyebrows.

good luck and enjoy your HM :)

  • I've done it myself, but usually I make my DH do it. He enjoys the benefits, he can help with the work.
