XP: Dog hair

We have two yellow labs who shed an enormous amount.  I was able to kind of ignore it, and just pick up the dust bunnies when they gathered, but my DS is about to crawl.  The idea of a floor covered in dog hair disgusts me and I can see that we are going to need daily sweeping.  The Swiffers are going to cost us a fortune as our whole house is hardwood floors.  I have a regular vacuum, but it is pain to lug around on a daily basis.  Any other suggestions for picking up dog hair???  I was reading about a Eureka Quick-Up bagless, cordless stick vacuum.  Any experience with it or something similar?

  • My mom just got this:

She LOVES it and I think she has convinced me to get it too. It is a pain to lug the vacuum around.

  • The broom seems to spread it more, but the microfiber cloths might work.

  • Do you use a shedding blade tool on your dogs? I have two labs as well using this has cut down on their shedding tremendously! http://www.amazon.com/Safari-Shedding-Medium-Large-Stainless/dp/B0002ARR22/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1286150335&sr=8-1
  • Also make sure you are feeding a high quality food.  Shedding is really really reduced when you feed something great.

  • I use a dry microfiber mop. The hair sticks to the microfiber, and then I just vacuum it off when it gets too hairy. Much easier than a vacuum.
  • We use microfiber cloths stuck to the Swiffer, and it works great for cat hair.

We also have renewed our love affair with our Roomba after replacing its battery.  You might be able to find a good deal on Black Friday.

My mom uses a stick vac...definitely more to lug around than a Swiffer, but smaller than a regularly sized vacuum.

  • I have a broom with microfiber pads. I just change them out and throw them in the washer occasionally. It works great for my cat's furballs (maine c00n = lots o' hair, even on a 4/5 star food).

I usually sweep the living room and kitchen twice a day to get the fuzzballs and litter trackings.

  • I have a boxer/yellow lab combo and a cat. Needless to say, I feel your pain about the hair.

The last time we were at the vet they suggested fish oil. We feed our dog just the regular human dose everyday and it has had a dramatic effect on the hair that is shed. (she thinks it's her special daily treat!)  Plus it makes her coat super soft and shiny! I would ask your vet and see if that would work for your labs.

During the spring when she sheds a lot we also use a de-sheader comb and that helps when it is overwhelming.

  • We have Scotch-Brite Microfiber Super Duster that I got from costco (it came with 2 covers) I went online and got another 6 so I can super dust once a day, toss the cover in the laundry and make it though the week without having any issues.

  • Same here, DD started crawling a couple of months ago.  My vacuum sits out in the open all the time, I vacuum at least twice a day and she's still my personal little "Roomba" with all the hair she picks up on her clothes while crawling.  Sad to say, I'm counting the days until we're dog free, too bad it's like 1500 days 'cuz they are only 7 years old.
  • I have the same problem with the dog hair. It is especially bad in the spring when he is shedding his winter coat. Try to bath him very regularly and I also use a steel curry comb (think thats what its called). When I bath him he literally clogs up the bath tub twice each time I bath him! He is on a high protein diet but I'm thinking of switching him as he is a little overweight too.

I vacuum at least once a day during the spring and use the vacuum attachement to clean furniture and baseboard edges. We also take a lint roller along the top of the couch where the cat lays. It has been a daily battle but I am glad I found this thread, I will have to try some of the previous poster's suggestions!! Thanks guys!
