Some news about my dad

So my dad's been feeling pretty crappy the last few weeks. He couldn't have chemo for 2 straight weeks b/c his platelets were low (side effect of the chemo) and had to wait for them to get back up. When they got back up, he still wasn't feeling well, so they brought him in for more tests and another CAT scan.

Turns out that the cancer has adapted to the chemo drugs he's been on...and it's no longer working. I mean, for the past 5 months, its been working great and tumors themselves are at least 50% of what they were when he started, so we're still going in the right direction, but it's starting to grow again. And it's spread to the lymph nodes around his liver so he still can't have surgery.

He starts a new type (a much more aggressive type) of chemo on Tuesday. It's really disheartening to know that the cancer is so adaptive and that the current treatment only worked for 5 months. It's something we knew could happen b/c the type of liver cancer he has is very tricky to treat and can change to get used to the drugs very quickly. We're just very bummed about it, but still hopeful that this next type will work better and faster (though he's going to be a lot sicker because of it).

IDK why i feel better telling you ladies -- i just feel like to tell people that i know and who know him personally is too much of a burden and at least you all can just step back and look at it for what it really is.

  • I'm sorry to hear this news Kim! But on the bright side, at least the doctors found out that his current chemo wasn't working anymore and they are able to switch him to something new. I know it's going to be hard on your dad and you and your family, but just know that we're all thinking about you. Lots of prayers for your dad.

  • So sorry to hear that the chemo's not working, but many thoughts and prayers that the new treatment will kick the cancer's butt! You are so positive; i'm sure your attitude is inspiring to your dad.
  • So sorry to hear about your dad :(  I kind of know what you're going through, as my mom had breast cancer twice.  The second round of chemo was very aggressive.  It made her very tired and weak. She is still undergoing mothly treatments- but she feels so much better now!  I know it is scary hearing about cancer, just be there for your dad.  He will be tired, but if he has his family around him, I bet it will give him hope and strength to keep going.  Hugs to you and prayers for your family.
