Re: Art Prize Talk
The Goodspeed Lofts, on Grandville across the street from Custer office furniture, is a must-visit. Don't miss the 5th floor.
Ditto with Alex Schweder La's piece.
I went to the top 10 announcement today...it was surprisingly low-key and over very quickly. I'm split pretty 50-50 between Yay! and Really?? when it comes to the top finishers.
I went to Gardens and wasn't all impressed with the items there. I thought it pretty much fit the "Gardens mold." I thought most of the pieces could have blended right into their sculpture park and not be noticed. I did see that only one piece made it into the top 100 and that was the balloons. Today, the art piece was about 10 purple balloons tied together.
There was one piece that I pointed out to the girls. It was people forms, a mother with a baby in her lap, and two kids on one side of the path, and then another "person" on the other side. Allison asked if that was the mommy and I pointed out the one on the other side with the baby. I told her the one by itself was the daddy and just in like in real life, mom has all the kids and dad is by off by himself. A lady next to us busted out laughing.
Note: Brian and I make jokes like that all the time about. When we were at the zoo Brian said something about one of the animals being just like a mom acting all crazy.
This was cool , but it also kind of freaked me out. I kept waiting for the "man" to turn his head at someone and say "gotcha". It was kind of creepy how reastic is was. I heard one guy say "If this thing walks off this platform, I'm outta here."
Allison's favorite thing downtown yesterday was the painted man/sculpture outside the Ford Museum. I pointed him out to her and told her that was a real man standing very still. I turned my back and was going to head up the steps when she yelled out MOM!!!! HE MOVED, HE MOVED. LOOK AT HIM. He was done for the night so he was packing up. She told me that she wanted to say Hi to him, which shocked me. When she discovered that he gave suckers to kids, he was her new best friend. But then she was all concerned that Mia didn't get one, so we had to go back and ask if her sister could have one.
Chymes, I with you about the yay/nay for the top 10. I kind of wish you could vote from the top 25 and the top 10 get the cash prizes.
I know they are going to do jurried awards this year, but it would be kind of cool if they had a 10 ten choice choices in different categories when they announce with the people choice top 10. Then this would highlight some of lesser know pieces and get people in the different areas.
We've been out of time much of ArtPrize but were able to spend a couple of hours downtown the evening before we left. I loved that there were so many people out! Very cool for Grand Rapids.
We didn't get to see a whole lot. I feel like it would take a week to see everything! My husband liked the giant paperclips in Calder Plaza -- they appealed to the accountant in him.
I liked a lot of the pieces in the Ford museum.
I was wondering if everything would still be up for this weekend. Good to know. Thanks!
