I just got in from my morning stint at the hospital. The good news is it was my last one because my babies come home tomorrow!!!!!
So here is what happened for those of you that like a birth story. I will follow this long asss story with pictures for those that make it through.....Remember my last post before the babies about putting up a sign for stupid people? Well I was just miserable all day, more than usual. I should have known it was a sign something was brewing. My parents visited, Marty came to see me after work as usual. I felt no different other than the extreme attitude problem. I only had 3 contractions during nighttime monitoring which was nothing compared to the few days before that. My doctor told me that if the babies didn't come on their own that week that we would schedule a csection for the following week at 36 weeks. So I was counting down the days telling myself just one more week. I was HUGE and very uncomfortable.
I went to bed around 11. I got up to pee at 12 and everything was just a little wetter than it should have been. So I stood there like "hmmm....my pants are a little wet. But not a lot. Was I sweating? Did I pee my pants a little?" While I was having these deep thoughts water was gushing down my leg and I realized I was definitely NOT peeing my pants. I buzzed the nurses desk. "Hi, my water broke" and went back to stand in the bathroom over a towel. I got in a gown and went back to the bed to be put on the monitors. More water. (I'm amazed how much water came out of me between then and delivery) I called Marty and told him we were having babies tonight and to pack a bag, walk Lucy and get his butt to the hospital.
Within about 3 minutes of my water breaking I started having contractions every 2 minutes. These made the contractions I was having the week prior seem like nothing. They were the real deal. Marty got there just as they were wheeling me to labor and delivery. (I was living in the mother/baby unit) I was in L&D having the most wicked contractions while they prepped me. They got to the point where I had no break in between and couldn't even talk. I told the nurses to tell the anesthesiologist to RUN down the hallway. Seriously, I have a whoooole new respect for drug free birth mamas. That shiit is intense. Marty had to answer questions for me because I was literally holding on to the bed for dear life praying for an end to the pain.
I got into the OR and the most wonderful man in the whole world gave me a spinal. I told him he was my best friend. It was a very weird feeling to not be able to move my legs but the relief was devine. Both doctors from my practice were called in since there were two babies and got there quickly. They called Marty into the OR (he was kicked out for the spinal) and in minutes Charlotte was born at 2:45 and Martin at 2:47. Charlotte was 5lb7oz and Martin was 4lb14oz. The neonatologist brought them close to my face so I could see them and then did the normal work on the baby stuff with them in the corner of the room. I could see them the whole time, which was nice. Marty went to take pics while they finished up with me. I got to see them again before they were taken to the NICU for evaluation then went to recovery.
After being in recovery for a while the neonatologist came to talk to us and then take Marty to see them while I slowly got feeling back in my legs. What is funny is that it came back in no particular order. I could feel one calf. Then one foot. Then my butt cheek. After I got feeling completely back I was wheeled into the NICU to see the babies then back to my room. I got back around 6am and was able to get out of bed at 5pm to go see them again. I started pumping right away.
I was there until Sunday. It was nice to be right down the hall from the babies. They both needed help regulating their breathing but had opposite problems. She was breathing too hard and he wasn't breathing enough. Each day they got better and we've been working on eating. When babies are so little eating is a real workout for them and they get tired so it's a challenge to get them to eat enough. We seem to have worked it out though because they are both back to their birth weights and come home tomorrow!
It's been a very hard and very long process but we are very lucky that we have two healthy babies that had nothing more than the usual preemie problems. I've cried a lot and I can't put into words what it is like to leave your babies in the hospital or see them with tubes helping them breath but know that overall we are lucky.
As for me, I feel fine. I took pain meds for a few days after I got home but have stopped them. I pump every 3 hours, even through the night, so they have breastmilk so I am already getting used to that schedule. One good thing about a NICU baby is that they are on quite a schedule! I have no complaints about the csection at all. I drove today for the first time since July and feel like a real human again.

Re: Hi, I'm back (this is looooong)

What a nice story! I wish I'd known that when your water breaks, it doesn't just happen then stop. The water keeps coming!
They are really beautiful and I'm sure you're thrilled to have them home.
Thanks!
They look big because it's just them in the pictures. If you saw them in comparison to an adult or a full term baby you would see they are just peanuts, Martin especially.

I'm not used to seeing preemies with such chubby cheeks! Beautiful! Congrats!
Just look at that hair! Congrats!
How come you still had to have a C- if your water broke on its own?
I can't get over all that dark hair! Is that Charlotte? Gorgeous!
And Martin is so blonde! So, so sweet BB!
Congratulations Mama!!!
I'm so happy for you guys!
Enjoy their coming home tomorrow!
I was just thinking the same thing, CMC!
