Love Atlanta

Hello!  A couple weeks ago I asked for everyone's opinion on if we should live in Alpharetta or not.  Well, this past weekend we visited and we absolutely love the area.  DH & I are counting down the days until we move.  However, I had one more question...if I work in Tucker and live in Alpharetta, is the traffic horrific?  I was thinking I could take back roads to avoid 400, but then I heard they're just as bad.   TIA!

Can't wait to meet y'all at a GTG in 2011!  Big Smile

Re: Love Atlanta

  • Yay! Glad you liked Alpharetta, it is a good 'burb.

Your commute, however will not be that pretty. To get to Tucker from Alpharetta, you will need to go on a bad stretch of I285 and go through Spaghetti Junction (where I285, I85, and several surface streets meet). You can figure on having a commute of well over an hour (if you work regular office hours). At approx. 25 miles away, backroads would be a riduculous option, even at midnight.  If you haven't yet accepted that job, I would suggest you limit your job search to OTP (outside the perimeter) between I75 & I85, and down through downtown.

  • Yay!  That's exciting and we definitely look forward to meeting you!

I can't speak to the area you're talking about but I would probably guess that those who told you taking back roads can be just as bad as the main roads are right.  Where we live, the back roads get ridiculously backed up as well.  Unfortunately, I don't think there is anyway to avoid the traffic down here...it's horrendous.  It's the worst traffic I've ever experienced (worse than Chicago, which I didn't think was possible)!  But it's okay...we all survive!

  • Glad you liked it! I can't remember from your original post, but are you set on living in Alpharetta?  If the job in Tucker is the draw, you could always look at Stone Mountain, Decatur, Virginia Highlands, and North Druid Hills areas.  Those are all on the same side as Tucker and you would be going opposite traffic during rush hours (which, if no one has told you, are 6-10 and 3-7! Haha!).  Just a thought. Good luck!

  • Holy crap. That is going to be an awful commute at an hour, easily, probably closer to an hour and a half. Back roads aren't even an option. I would consider looking elsewhere for housing. I couldn't do that for the long term and I have a high tolerance for max speeds of 8 mph. I would look closer to work, in all honesty. I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but that commute is crazycakes.
  • That stinks!  CryingThe situation is DH will be working in Alpharetta and I?m hoping to transfer with my current company - which has a corporate office in Tucker.  I haven?t dropped the bomb on them yet and there is a chance they won?t have a spot for me.  If it doesn?t work out then I guess I?ll start looking for another job that?s closer to Alpharetta or I?ll just have to suck it up and get some great cd?s or finally upload more songs on my ipod.  Smile

Seriously - don't do it. You have no idea how bad the traffic is. It will wear you down mentally something awful. If you want to stay at your company in Tucker, then pick a spot halfway between Alpharetta and Tucker, that way you're both sharing the commute instead of him being fine and you being miserable.

Ditto. I thought I "understood" traffic since I was from DC. I was 100% wrong. The Atlanta Metro area has a very limited public transit system, so many are FORCED to drive. You will be miserable with this commute. Why don't you guys look around Dunwoody or Sandy Springs?  Those are nice areas that are in between Tucker and Alpharetta.

Don't forget the "lunch rush hour" from 11-1.

  • So true!!!

  • an epic commute will drive you NUTS.  my DH currently drives 204 miles every day back and forth from our house to work in ATL...we're working hard to try and get our house fixed so we can move closer...and the commute from south of ATL and back is wayyyy less hectic than the one north into ATL and back.
  • and ditto on the rec for Dunwoody or Sandy Springs. Those are beautiful areas with tons of amenities that are more of a halfway point for you guys. Especially your husband will have a reverse commute in the morning, so it's not too bad.
  • Right now in Houston I have an hour drive...sometimes longer and I'm only  23 miles away from home.  So, I am kind of used to it.  But, maybe I'll convince DH to check out Dunwoody anyway.  Thank you again for the advice!

    YIKES!!!

For your own good, listen to us. You do NOT want to commute from Alpharetta to Tucker. It will be very, very bad. Trust me when I say that it will not compare to Houston traffic. I travel to Houston frequently on business, and I've been there during rush hour, and believe me, it does not compare. After one week you will be so miserable you won't be able to stand it.

It will easily take you an hour and a half to get to/from home. That means if traffic is "flowing" and there are no accidents. If you add in an accident (or two, which is very possible due to the amount of highway you will be traveling), you are looking at 2-3 hours to get home. Do you really want to live that way?

  • I actually live in Alpharetta and work about 5 mins from Tucker.  To be honest, it really depends where in Alpharetta you live to get a sense of how good (or bad) your commute will be. You will also have to consider your work hours. If you have flex time, that will change things as well. There are lots of back roads you can take from Alpharetta to get to Tucker and none of them involve 400. In general, traffic in Atlanta is pretty bad, but don't fret too much about living in Alpharetta and working in Tucker. I've been doing it for 9 years and I haven't been compelled to move.
