My husband just had an interview that would possibly move us from Virginia to Austin and I'm just wonder what the area is like.
I'm particularly concerned about employment for myself. I'm almost done with my master in library science and want to work as an elementary school librarian. I know school has already started for this year but does anyone know how jobs in that line might be?
Thanks!!
Re: Moving to Austin?
You'll have a tougher time in Austin finding a librarian position than in other places. UT Austin has a very good School of Information (used to be Library and Information Science until they got rid of the "L" word) and people come here for their Masters and don't want to leave. As a result, salaries are also lower for the field than in other cities - with a large pool of applicants, they don't have to pay as much.
To be a school librarian, you'll also have to take a state certification exam. Depending on what courses you've taken, you may have to take more courses here to even be eligible to take the exam. Usually, schools want you to have two years of teaching experience as well.
Don't want to discourage you, but I know it helps to be aware of what you are up against when trying to find a job.
Wow thanks for filling me in some!! I hadn't realized there was a school with a masters program right there so that certainly does change the job market a bit but good to have that info before hand!
At the moment a job has not yet been offered but there are a LOT of things working in his favor. If it does happen I will be sure and email you to make contact with the other librarians which is really nice of you to offer.
Seriously thanks again!
I agree with previous posters, the job market for people with the MSI (or MLS, MIS, etc.) is very competitive in Austin. I have an MSI, I graduated in 2008 (not from UT) and have had a terrible time trying to find a position in my field (I'm employed now, but the salary is very low and the position is more administrative than library staff).
From what I recall about postings I have seen, you also usually need to have your school media certification, which requires two years of teaching experience.
That said, as someone who has been scouring the Librarian job postings in Austin for the past two years, I have seen a fair amount of openings for school librarians. And they tend to pay pretty well, if you can get them. Oh, a good website for Austin library jobs is the University of Texas's iSchool jobweb: http://www.ischool.utexas.edu/jobweb/Search.php
Beyond the job market though, I love Austin! It's a great place to live.
Well, best to know what I may be getting into!
I am a certified teacher and I worked for two years as a school librarian so hopefully that would be enough.
Haven't heard back from the job yet but it has the possibility of being a long process (if past experience says anything). But time will tell
Thanks so much for your input
