Re: Apple Butter

  • I made some not too long ago.  It was super easy.

I put about 1/4 inch of applecider in the crockpot. I cored and chopped some apples until the crockpot was 1/2 full.  You have to look online to see if they're good for applesauce/apple butter.  Different types of apples hold up differently in the cooking processes.

I put cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg in with the apples.

When the apples where soft, I purreed them with an immerssion blender. I then put brown sugar in until it was as sweet as I like it.  I continued to let it cook in the crockpot until it was almost as thick as apple butter (it thickens more in the firdge).

I put it in bottles, but didn't go through the 'canning process' so it's only fridge stable, and not shelf stable.

Sorry for the lack of measurements.  Its one of those things that goes by taste, because the sweetness in the apples dictates how much sugar to add.

  • If you have a crockpot, google "all day apple butter in crockpot."

The way it makes your house smell is totally worth it.

That's the point of using the crockpot, silly!

You put all of the ingredients in the crockpot in the morning (apples, sugar, cinnamon, cloves usually, salt) and then let it do it's thing all day long. At the end of the day, you have apple butter.

  • ok  now cloves are the leaf things right? and you completely core the apple and take the skin off of it? sorry i stink at cooking. and what temp do you let it go at if i go to work?

  • I left the skin on, because I ran it through a blender.  If you don't want to run it through a blender, take the skins off.

There's more flavor in the skins.

Ohh,and for cloves - I just buy the ground cloves, like other spices.

Apple butter is used like jam.

I like to use sweeter apples, and put canned pumpkin in as well.  With that you don't have to add much sugar, so I consider it somewhat healthy.
