Holy hair loss! Need suggestions....

I'm pretty sure I'm going to be bald by the time I'm 35....

I've noticed lately that more and more hair seems to be falling out, when I shower, brush, things like that. I've always had really thin hair. Before I was pregnant it was like this too, just not as bad. Now it just seems to be getting worse.

Any suggestions on shampoo or some hair care products to make hair stronger, so I don't go bald? Smile

Re: Holy hair loss! Need suggestions....

  • I lost a metric ton of hair after the births of my sons (but not after my daughter, strangely enough). Hair elastics that used to wrap around my ponytail three times wrapped around six times! Every time I washed my hair, it clogged up the shower drain, and like you, I was afraid I'd go bald.

Then the hair loss stopped after a couple months and new growth kicked in. Of course, then I had tiny little hairs sticking up all over my head, but at least it grew back! Hopefully the same will happen for you. But if you're really worried, you could see your doctor.

  • I don't have any product discussions, but I do have a similar issue.  I can easily get a handful of hair each time I shower.  I was concerned that I was "shedding" too much and going to go bald.  My hair dresser said not to worry.  It feels like I have "thin" hair; I have lots and lots of hair, it's just all real fine.  So, since I have more pieces of hair, I will shed more pieces.  Fro me, I wear my hair up a lot, so it doesn't fall out as much during the day.  Instead, the majority comes out in the shower, making it feel like more than average.

Long story short, for me, she said not to worry unless I notice my hair is actually thinning or my hair line is receding.  I pray I never get to that point.  My dad's side is all bald (men), but I think the balding gene is from the maternal side... O, and also, I have a friend in college who used a shampoo called Nioxin or something like that, that was supposed to make her hair thicker (or maybe not fall out as much).  Can't remember excactly, but it made your head tingly :)

  • The girl that cuts my husband's hair gave him some stuff to try.  She mentioned that she used it when she was pregnant and it worked great.  I'll check the name of it tonight and let you know.

  • It doesn't sound unusual for post partum hair loss but if you are concerned you can speak to your doctor who might refer you to an endocrinologist. A friend of mine ended up having a brush test done at the endocrinologist. They measured how much hair she lost with normal brushing and that helped determine if the hair loss was excessive or within the range of normal. But right now it sounds a lot like typical post partum hair loss. I certainly hope that is all it is!

  • I don't have any suggestions, but I did want to add a comment to it being a pretty normal occurrence.

Recently when I went to a new hairdresser, he asked me (after looking at my hair for a few minutes) if I had recently had a baby. When I asked why - he said I had a lot of strands at the front that were broken off very short. He said it's something he usually sees in women who are post-partum. I told him I wasn't - I just wear headbands and ballcaps a lot.

He did comment that it goes away after a few months when it's a post-partum issue - according to what he's seen.

  • I use Nioxin (I think that is how u spell it).  I get it at Ulta.  It works pretty well.  Hopefully its just a PP issue!

    Thanks! That would be awesome.

Moesten - I tend to make things seem worse than they are! I'm sure it just seems like I'm losing more than I really am. But I'll definitely follow up with a doctor if it seems like it's getting out of control. I never really thought about doing that in the past.

I think this is it!  I know it starts with an "N" and that looks familiar.

  • I don't have anything to add, but I just wanted to say that this is one of my worries about being pregnant. I have fine, thin hair that barely covers my scalp as it is. I'm terrified of losing more hair postpartum!

Thanks for the suggestin of Nioxin ladies. I will have to pick that up from the mall and see it helps me at all.

  • #1 - like PPs mentioned, this is fairly common after pregnancy, as your hormones are still fluctuating on their way back to normal. Should stop soon, and you definitely shouldn't have to worry about going bald.

#2 - if it's not normal post-pg hair loss, then from my years working for a derm I can tell you that the majority of hair loss in women is stress-related, and there's little you can do besides reduce your stress levels.

#3 - if you're pretty sure it's neither of those, and you're still concerned, I'd see your family doctor or a derm if you have one. There are a few treatments available for abnormal hair loss.

    GL!
  • It sounds like you are experiencing telogen effevlium or post-pg hair loss. It's temporary hair loss. Your hormones are trying to stabilize and while they do that one of the side effects is hair loss. You could try taking a good multi vitamin in the mean time and try to wash your hair every other day and use a dry shampoo.  If it lasts more than 6 months then I would see a doctor.
  • I feel like I didn't lose any hair while I was pregnant and then a few months postpartum I started shedding like a dog in the summertime.  It'll stop - but it will probably seem like it takes for.ev.er.

Everyone else has good advice for you.

  • My gut after reading the subject line and that it was you said "post partum hair loss"  I lost a TON of hair from about mos 4-8 pp.  I literally had a daily clump in the shower I'd clean up daily. It seemed like a lot, but I never had actual bald spots.  LIke pp said, if you think it's bad, call your doc for a look... but it wouldn't surprise me if it was normal pp hair loss (you don't lose much when your preggo)

  • It will stop by the time baby's about 6 months old. I promise. If you find something that works, let me know--I lost a ton of hair after both DD and DS, it was depressing.
