Hello! A couple weeks ago I asked for everyone's opinion on if we should live in Alpharetta or not. Well, this past weekend we visited and we absolutely love the area. DH & I are counting down the days until we move. However, I had one more question...if I work in Tucker and live in Alpharetta, is the traffic horrific? I was thinking I could take back roads to avoid 400, but then I heard they're just as bad. TIA!
Can't wait to meet y'all at a GTG in 2011!
Re: Love Atlanta
Yay! Glad you liked Alpharetta, it is a good 'burb.
Your commute, however will not be that pretty. To get to Tucker from Alpharetta, you will need to go on a bad stretch of I285 and go through Spaghetti Junction (where I285, I85, and several surface streets meet). You can figure on having a commute of well over an hour (if you work regular office hours). At approx. 25 miles away, backroads would be a riduculous option, even at midnight. If you haven't yet accepted that job, I would suggest you limit your job search to OTP (outside the perimeter) between I75 & I85, and down through downtown.
Yay! That's exciting and we definitely look forward to meeting you!
I can't speak to the area you're talking about but I would probably guess that those who told you taking back roads can be just as bad as the main roads are right. Where we live, the back roads get ridiculously backed up as well. Unfortunately, I don't think there is anyway to avoid the traffic down here...it's horrendous. It's the worst traffic I've ever experienced (worse than Chicago, which I didn't think was possible)! But it's okay...we all survive!
That stinks!
The situation is DH will be working in Alpharetta and I?m hoping to transfer with my current company - which has a corporate office in Tucker. I haven?t dropped the bomb on them yet and there is a chance they won?t have a spot for me. If it doesn?t work out then I guess I?ll start looking for another job that?s closer to Alpharetta or I?ll just have to suck it up and get some great cd?s or finally upload more songs on my ipod.
Seriously - don't do it. You have no idea how bad the traffic is. It will wear you down mentally something awful. If you want to stay at your company in Tucker, then pick a spot halfway between Alpharetta and Tucker, that way you're both sharing the commute instead of him being fine and you being miserable.
Ditto. I thought I "understood" traffic since I was from DC. I was 100% wrong. The Atlanta Metro area has a very limited public transit system, so many are FORCED to drive. You will be miserable with this commute. Why don't you guys look around Dunwoody or Sandy Springs? Those are nice areas that are in between Tucker and Alpharetta.
Don't forget the "lunch rush hour" from 11-1.

Right now in Houston I have an hour drive...sometimes longer and I'm only 23 miles away from home. So, I am kind of used to it. But, maybe I'll convince DH to check out Dunwoody anyway. Thank you again for the advice!
YIKES!!!
For your own good, listen to us. You do NOT want to commute from Alpharetta to Tucker. It will be very, very bad. Trust me when I say that it will not compare to Houston traffic. I travel to Houston frequently on business, and I've been there during rush hour, and believe me, it does not compare. After one week you will be so miserable you won't be able to stand it.
It will easily take you an hour and a half to get to/from home. That means if traffic is "flowing" and there are no accidents. If you add in an accident (or two, which is very possible due to the amount of highway you will be traveling), you are looking at 2-3 hours to get home. Do you really want to live that way?
