Tell me more about the Brazilian Blowout! I've been considering it, because my hair is in a constant state of frizz. Is it expensive? The places I've seen it advertised are crazy expensive.
Re: ~jenirvt~
I go to Ahava Spa downtown on St. Clair, near 5/3 Field. It is NOT expensive there...it's the cheapest in town. They charge depending on hair length and thickness. Starts at $99 and goes NO higher than $200. My hair is about shoulder-length and it cost me $120 last time. It's AMAZING, I know it sounds stupid to say it changed my life, but it did. My hair is very curly/frizzy/thick/all around nuts. I can now blowdry it for about 5 minutes only using my fingers and it gets almost 100% straight but still has body so it's not flat. If I want it absolutely PIN straight, I flat iron it (heat also activates the product so it makes it super shiny too!), but really for everyday it's not needed. My hair is actually of "normal" texture now...the BBO made it really soft so it feels like "real" hair and not a coarse, rough mess....and it makes the hair ABSOLUTELY smooth. Not ONE single frizz. I got it done in July and even with the heat and humidity, I never had a single bad hair day!!!
It lasts ~12 weeks, I am on my 14th week and I can tell it's fading off a bit because my hair will have small frizzies after I dry it, but it's still NO where near as bad as it was pre-treatment. It still gets straight with just blowdrying and fingers, too. I hear that the treatment has a cumulative effect, so it is supposed to be better with each application. I use the shampoo/conditioner/serum, which are quite $$ (about $38 PER BOTTLE) but I also got a tip from a friend who has one that you can use L'Oreal Everpure shampoo and conditioner, too. So I rotate between the two brands.
LOVE it, recommend it to everyone who asks, it's completely worth the money, hands down....at least for me it was, anyhow.
That sounds really great! And that price is much better that prices I've been quoted. (I think one was $299!)
My hair used to be naturally straight, but now it has just a bit of wave. If I let it dry naturally, it is frizzy and unmanagable.
I'm glad you had such a great experience with yours! I'm definitely going to try it now!
::butting in:: I'm listening to the radio right now (92.5) and they are going to be talking to Dr. Oz about if a Brazilian Blowout can be dangerous if not deadly to your heath. They haven't said anything else but thought it was wierd that you gals were talking about it and then it came up on the radio.

Yeah, there has been some drama around it recently due to something fishy that happened...I don't believe the whole thing and BBO has repeated released press releases that the product is, indeed safe. A random hairstylist was getting headaches from using it (in the state of Oregon) so she took it to her friend who worked in a lab and they tested it and found formaldehyde in it. So this huge press release came out and people were freaking out. BBO just had it re-tested and indeed it came back with NO (or very, very little ppm) formaldehyde in it. First off, I do not trust anything that starts off with someone hand-delivering the solution to a lab in an opened, unlabeled Tupperware.....anyhow, BBO has already been tested by OSHA which said the product is free of formaldehyde and such, so I believe it to be safe. The concern about the formaldehyde is it is a potenial carcinogen when inhaled, and some people complain of "vapors" being emitted during the process. I did not experience any vapors at all...no weird smell, no nothing.
I work in research - CANCER research no less - and I use Formalin (the liquid form of formaldehyde) every day. I am not worried about it. First off, if it does contain formaldehyde, it is not the clients who are going to have serious exposure, it's the hairstylists. Getting the solution put on my head for an hour isn't of concern to me. It's the stylists who do it multiple times a day and breathe in vapors (IF it has formaldehyde in it...which ALL of the "brazilian keratin treatments" do....why this brand got pinpointed, I am not sure, but I maintain it's some sort of setup by a competitor).
Other things that emit formaldehyde vapors: new furniture and insulation (so if you live in a new house, or just got new furniture, you are probably breathing it in).
If you go on the NIH website, you can navigate to an area which will tell you all the products that contain formaldehyde or things in the "hyde" family. Up until a few years ago, OPI nail polish had formaldehyde in it, and you put your fingers in your MOUTH when eating, etc....
Furthermore, women inject BOTULISM into their faces to prevent wrinkles, and breath in gobs of acrylic dust to get their nails done every two weeks... NOT WORRIED. It is not going to kill anyone. And if it does, I'll have fabulous hair when I kick the bucket.
This made me LOL!
Lol, I wasn't trying to start anything, I just thought that it was wierd it was brought up here and then I heard that on the radio. I've never had one done(I'm not even sure I really know what one is), but I wasn't sure if you ladies had heard about it so I thought I'd share

Oh, I know!!! When this press broke out (I guess they did a segment on GMA for it or something last week), people kept texting me about how my hair treatment was gonna kill me....it's the scientist in me...I have to do my research and then spew out all my data
Anyhow they did have it tested by OSHA in Cali and it's safe.
