Digital camera recs?
Looking for a new camera, preferably under $300. Any recommendations?
I am basically camera illiterate so I need a point and shoot model.

My sister and BFF - who are both pretty savvy photogs - talked me into this one (or a similar model). They had been raving about it based on actual use and numerous reviews in the camera world.
I was a little skepitcal but the camera guy at National Camera said it couldn't be beat. (I highly recommend going there to test things out and get advice - they are great!) He was "ehh, OK but not great" on Canons and said Nikon was a better option, but the best, by far was the Lumix (seriously - those were his words). It has a better lens, better construction, HD stereo video and a massive zoom. You pay a little bit more, but get MUCH more.
I'm very happy with it - the video is crystal clear, I love the large view screen and it has so many shot options it can be dizzying (I love the old-school B&W - a bit grainy and super cool!). It isn't as compact and pocket sized as some of the Nikons or Canons, but it isn't huge either (I carry that and my DSLR and assorted lenses in a messenger style camera bag - it all fits!).

We love it, and it takes great pictures! It was also written up in Consumer Reports as a best buy. I think it is a step down from the one strength posted, so depending on what you want to spend... I don't think I'll ever buy anything other than a canon from now on!

My best friend really dislikes her camera that takes normal batteries. She said it burns through them incredibly fast, even when the camera is off. If she leaves new batteries in it, they are dead within a week, even if she didn't take any photos. Her camera is a Sony, I think.
I really love my Canon Powershot, so another vote there..

another canon rec - you cant go wrong.
and go with the lithium. they charge fairly fast - and just buy an extra battery. mine lasts forever, so ive never found myself with a dead battery when im out and about. but its nice to have a back up too just incase.
i hated my last camera with regular batteries - like anita said about her friends - they do go through them super fast. and its just a waste.

Good choice on going with lithium batteries. I had a Sony camera that used AA batteries and I went through batteries like crazy. It was getting expensive, so I bought rechargeable batteries, but if you're going to use those, you might as well use a rechargeable lithium battery.
I know several people who have the Canon powershot and love it!

We had a Kodak that took normal batteries for Greta's birth and we missed so many pictures because the batteries kept dying. I had charged up $50 worth of rechargeable batteries before going to the hospital and they all lasted minutes before we'd have to switch batteries. So frustrating! I've had my Canon for about 4 months and I think I just charged the battery for the 3rd or 4th time yesterday and I use my camera everyday for pics and video.

This hands down! My GF bought this camera and LOVES it. She used to have DSLR and she loves this camera even more. It gets great reviews on Amazon and National Camera Exchange also recommended. They are great to work with and will ask you the right questions about what you want to get out of your camera. They can recommend a great camera for you. He recommended a Sony for us. We love it, the pictures load really quick to the card, so we are able to take pictures more quickly. The Luminex wasn't out yet when we bought our camera.
