I just need to get this out. (vent)

I went for yet another interview yesterday.  Here's some of the backstory,  it was something that career services at school found, Debra, the Paralegal that is working there now, who actually graduated from the same school and got this postion from the school has decided to be a SAHM after working for this attorney for 15 years.

The interview went well and after being grilled for over an hour, and given a typing test (woohoo I typed 65wpm) then I was asked if I had any other questions.  I asked the standards, job details, hours, things like that, I even asked him how long he had been practicing, and he looked at me like I had three heads, but he told me about himself.

Then he said to me don't you want to know something else???   He said salary??  I didn't bring it up, because usually it's somthing that doesn't get discussed on the first interview.

This is what he said, and I almost fell on the floor.

"Well I'm sorry but I can't offer any benefits to you (he's a solo so I was expecting that) but then he said, I don't like to tell anyone when to go to lunch, but you know Debra never takes a lunch (hidden meaning no lunch), and I think I give her one paid week off a year, but she never takes it (hidden meaning, don't plan on any vacation time and really after 15 years 1 week of vacation Hmm).

Now here's the kicker, he was only ofering a salary slightly higher than minimum wage.  And he won't be making his decision for a couple more weeks.

I understand I don't have really any experience, but that's just insulting, come on I can work at Dunkin Donuts down the street from my house and make more money than that.

Right now I'm just flustered and frustrated.  I never thought it would take me six months to find a job. I'm even willing to temp and I can't find anything, I've lost all motivation to do anything, all I do is knit, cook and look for jobs.

Sorry, I just had to get this out, and if you read the entire thing you deserve a cupcake.

  • Oh no, Vikki.

I interviewed for a job like that once, where they wanted me to work a ton of OT and if it got excessive they would do something about it.  I said, No Thanks, there are days that I am going to want to leave on time.

Anyway, I hope you find a good position.

  • I'm sorry Vikki, that is so frustrating. What's sad is he will probably find someone desperate enough to jump on his offer too. But how does he think he can be competitive with other employers? Crazy.

Hang in there, I know you'll find something soon.

  • Oh Vikki- that blows! DO NOT SETTLE. The right thing will come along.

    (((((hugs)))))

  • Sorry, Vikki. That blows. I'm sure there are people desperate enough to take jobs like that because I see similar wages and lack of benefits in job postings every day, even jobs that require a few years of experience.

  • Thanks Guys,

I really can't believe it.  I know it's tough out there, but really you're going to ask for so much and give so little in return.

  • Not only is what he offering total suck, but the guy sounds like a douchebag on top of it. You don't deserve that.

  • That guy deserves a glitter punch for sure! I'm so sorry Vikki. I know the perfect job is out there for you somewhere.

  • I'd take the position to get something on my resume, take the lunch breaks, and when he snaps, file a claim against him.

    Ugh....what a douche.

I say I'd take it, but I probably couldn't Who starts a new job knowing it's going to 100% suck???

  • Oh I'm sorry.  I can see how frustrating this is for you. :(  I couldn't work for a douche like that.  No way!  I hope you find something and find it soon!  Have you been looking on Craigslist?  My mom has been looking for MONTHS and finally got a bite and had an interview Tues. for a job she found on craigs.  She hasn't gotten the job yet, but she said the interview was promising.  Good luck.
  • Dude. That's ridiculous. I wouldn't want to work for someone who was like that right off the bat - no thanks.

I know something will come along. I'm still throwing job dust your way and keeping fingers crossed!!

Ok, losing your motivation is normal. It is frustrating and it kills your self esteem when you job hunt and don't land something in a very short period of time. Sure you have to find a way to get yourself out of that spiral of doom, but keep telling yourself you are ok to feel this way- it is frustrating, it is annoying, but it is so normal and there is nothing wrong with you.

Next. Dude? WTF? Seriously?!?!? Mid interview you rabbit on about Debra not taking lunch breaks or any vacation time?!?! Ok if you do get a second interview, you have my permission to turn this job down. Not with a polite over the phone no thank you, either. Oh no.... you get in there, you get right in front of his face, and you tell him how SHOCKING it is for someone to suggest you skip your legal entitlement to any and all breaks. And furthermore, the wages are pathetic (oh yeah, totally use the word pathetic as well), and be sure to tell him that you are worth more than that. So, you bring to the table your talent, your skills, your incredibly high work ethic and he brings to the table a decent salary of at least X, and an acceptable benefit package of at least X number of days off for personal/vacation times. Don't forget to remind him he will get what he pays for- if he wants the best then he better step up to the plate. If he wants crap, then good luck to him.

Ok, so it most likely won't get you the job. It sucks anyway as it is and there is no way anyone sane would take it. But OMG what a total high you would get from it, right?!?!? It's like free power boost!!

  • Welcome to my world. I'm really sorry, Vikki, I'm hoping for a lot better for you. I've worked for that same kind of ass when I had to, and it's part of what's souring me to the profession. Don't forget, at my last firm after I worked for months on that appeal, breaking my back, going home only to shower, change, and sleep a few hours, working a full 30 hours straight at the end, as soon as I said the word "raise," they fired me. The profession is full of these assholes who will take advantage if you let them. DO NOT let them. You'll find better.
  • Ugh, what a jerk.  There are some real class acts out there!  I can imagine the job search is wearing on you, but keep your head up and remember that you are worth so much more than that!!

  • wow. That really sucks.

and I agree, if he wants better, he's going to have to do more than what he is willing, but whatever floats his boat.

You'll find better. It'll be worth the wait. Everything happens for a reason, there is a plan for you.
