Sorry for being a PW tonight. I'm so annoyed right now with my FIL's care at the hospital. He is going to be there for at least another month it sounds like. He crashed horribly last night and my BIL is now on emergency leave from the Army.
His platelets are still low, he's still bleeding into his GI, and now his spleen seems to causing a lot of issues. They started him on another new drug to try to get the platelet levels up, but that and the stairoids are the only thing they can do currently. Also he received 4 units of blood and I don't even remember how many units of platelets last night. They just keep pumping it into him and it's not working. I feel like we did not get him to the hospital in the city soon enough and that the last hospital sat on their butts and did nothing. My FIL wasn't suppose to have any blood transfusions since he's on the waiting list for a new liver. Well that went out the window just to make sure he made it through the night. I feel horrible for Andrew and the family because all they are getting is "well we need to wait and see" ![]()
They are waiting for the new medicine to work and then the goal is to remove the spleen. Well we can't have that done until next week because he would bleed out on the table if we did it now.
My MIL is obviously stressed over this, not sleeping well and now is worried about her job. I have already instructed her to fill out her FMLA paperwork and get it back into HR asap. HR ladies, I have one question though, would my MIL's work back date her leave from the first day she was out of work? We are on week too already, so she would only be left with 10 weeks. I am hoping this is more than enough time for her and that FIL is home and recovering well before then. I also informed Andrew and her that FIL can go onto STD to secure his job, granted his company has not said one thing about him being out of work now for 3 weeks.
Ok sorry that was so long, but I just needed to get this all out. I can't vent to Andrew because he's already upset about it all. Granted I do the crying for the two of us.

I am not a nurse but have spent many years around lots of ER nurses and doctors and sometimes all you can do is wait and see if the medications and tranfusions will work. It sucks and is not the answer anyone wants but doesn't mean they are not doing all they can do. I hope they can find all the bleeds and get his platelet level up so he will stop bleeding and start recovering.

I'm so sorry Dana. Many vibes to your FIL for a speedy recovery.
Does your MIL's company have FMLA? (they have to have over 50 employees) If they do, they're allowed to have their own internal policies about the procedure for requesting it and whether they'll apply it retroactively. I agree w/ Summer -- make sure your dad has followed the right FMLA procedure w/ his job too, because STD doesn't protect the job. FMLA protects his job and his health insurance.
Thanks everyone. As far as nurses go we are surround in our families with them. My mom, MIL, 2 of Andrew's aunts and grandmother are all nurses.
Summer thanks for reminding me to have FIL go under FMLA as well. It slipped my mind last night when we were talking about it all.
I spoke with FIL this morning. He sounded very week, but he's hopeful they will get everything under control soon. I haven't gotten a new update since my MIL was talking to the nurses when I called.
