What size is obese or too thin?
I saw them talking about this on MM (which is totally OT, hah)
Generally, what size would you consider too thin? What size would you consider obese? What is a normal/healthy size?
Re: What size is obese or too thin?
I agree, I think it just depends on the person's body type. For example, my sis is a size 00 and 5 feet tall, but she is just really petite and lean. She's pretty much all muscle. I have another friend who just told me a few days ago that she was a size 00 and complaining she couldn't find clothes in the stores, but she's what I would call too thin - not much muscle and really tiny bony arms. As for obese....I'm just not sure. I have a much better idea of what too thin is than obese, for some reason.
Yup - agreed. I honestly think for the average woman, anything below a 4 is too thin, and anything above a 16-18 would be obese. I know it depends on the height and stuff like that though.
I'd say 6/8 is normal, but I'm 5'9" and comfortably in a 10 - so I think I'm OK.
I think it's so hard to say, depending on body type. I'm 5'8" ish with a large frame and when I got down to a 145 pounds and a size 6, I looked ill. Like random people making comments ill.
So, for me, a size 4 or 6 is too small, a size 20 may be obese. When I weighed 190, I wore a 14 or 16.
I also think the BMI is mostly crap and not a great indicator of obesity or health. I weigh 160 now, in a size 8 or 10, and the BMI has me just into the "overweight" catogory. BS. I am smokin'.
For those of you that have met me....do you think I am too thin?
I've never met you but based on what I've seen in pictures you are 'petite' not too thin. For some reason I don't think extra weight would make you look any better.
Too me too thin is like Oklagirl said when people look sick.
I've never met you, but I have seen pictures, and I don't think you're too thin. You are petite. Like I said, it's so hard to judge by a weight or a dress size. Body types and frames differ so much.
Too thin: obviously sickly looking, no muscle tone
Obese: I prefer to refer to the body fat percentage, which puts me in that range, unfortunately. I am a 16. When I am fit, I'm a 12 and cannot get my body any smaller than that without practically starving.
I don't like this topic at all. It varies from person to person too much to generalize like that.
I've seen these "obese" people running marathons, and I've seen "normal" people unable to do a single push-up. I've seen "too thin" people eating like horses. There are too many factors in body type, including things that cannot be helped such as genetics and various diseases and health conditions that are NOT caused by an unhealthy lifestyle.
I don't think judging people by their body type is correct in this instance. You should be judging them by what they're doing to try and keep themselves healthy.

I think as a society we concentrate too much on what is thin or what is obese and obsess too much over whether we are or not. What we should be concentrating on are eating a healthy diet (plenty of fruits, veggies, lean proteins and fiber) and getting exercise most days of the week.
I?ve known people who were, what most people on this board, consider obese to eat better and be more active than most people their size and who are obese who live to be in their 90?s. I?ve also known people who, what most people on this board, to be a ?healthy? size who actually had a food disorder or who were lazy, didn?t eat right and had a slew of health problems and died young.
It doesn?t matter what size we are or how much we weigh it comes down to a quality of lifestyle and how well we take care of ourselves. This includes eating, exercising, stress, etc. It also includes letting yourself enjoy life every once in awhile and ?splurging? ? life?s more fun when you do.

Well, that's definitely true. Great point, man. I kept seeing the blanket "00 is too thin" and kept thinking, "But you need to see my sister! She really is very athletic!"
Really, it shouldn't matter what other people think of us, frankly, as long as we're comfortable in our own skin. Wasn't that Mr. Rogers-ish of me to say?
But so true. You're the only one who knows what your body has been through, after all.
This is a real question, no snark. Ginger and Starprincess - How are people you know who are obese running marathons and eating healthy? They're probably not people who want to stay obese, it sounds like they're changing their habits, yes? I'm all for ignoring the size/weight/BMI and being healthy - but you're not healthy when you're obese.
I know everyone is different and a size 10 on me is going to look different than a size 10 on Cati. I just have heard some people *gasp* at the thought of being a size 12 like it's morbidly obese or something. Or hate themselves for being a size 12. I've never thought of someone as a size 12 as being overweight - it's just not a "big" size in my mind. I was just curious what registered to some as a "big" size. I've been up and down a lot of them.
I hate the BMI scale too. It says I'm currently in the "overweight" category, and I'm not overweight. I think that system is pretty flawed and I don't put much faith in it.
I think it just depends on what you're used to. You get used to wearing a certain size, but when you gain weight and have to buy the next size up and then the next size up, you start thinking "man I'm so fat compared to before", even if others wouldn't consider you overweight.

We can use me for an example. To you I probably look like an overweight person who sits on her duff all day and eats all junk food. When in actuality I exercise at least 4 days a week and eat quite healthily. My goal isn't to lose weight, it is to take care of myself. I do have hormone issues and thyroid issues and stress and things that do complicate my "losing" of weight. I now know that it isn't what size I am, but whether I take care of myself or not. If I lose weight as a result great, if I don't that is fine too. My blood pressure is great, my cholesterol is fine, I don't have diabetes and I'm happy. To me those are things that matter, NOT my size. I'm not saying there aren't lazy, unhealthy eating obese people out there nor am I saying that there isn't always room for improvement. I am saying that just because someone IS obese doesn't mean they aren't completely unhealthy.
Like I said earlier, I think we put too much emphasis on what size we are and whether we are skinny or fat. This isn't what is important, taking care of yourself and loving yourself no matter what size you are is what is important.

good golly! If YOU are 'overweight' on the BMI then I'm freaking TLC special need a forklift to get out of the house. BMI is crap.
I think Heather said it well, but I will add: Those people I know who are obese are trying to be healthy. The point I was trying to make is that being "healthy" doesn't automatically mean you're going to be skinny. There are two people who I am thinking of in particular who I know like this. One I know has genetics against her, and when she was in high school she was extremely overweight. She's still pretty overweight, despite making healthier choices now. But people see this person and automatically think she eats 5 Big Macs a day and shovels down potato chips by the bag. That's not the case.
The other person I know has been running in marathons, half marathons, 5ks, etc. for several years now. Has this person lost a lot of weight? Yes. But they are still considered "obese" and look it too. You cannot deny that not just anyone can go out and RUN a whole marathon. That takes a lot of time and effort to get to a point where you can physically do that. Again, people probably judge this person too.
As a general rule, I will concede that being "normal" = being healthier. But I think it's foolish to think that this is the case with EVERY person. If I were considered seriously obese but was doing everything I could to live a healthy lifestyle, even if the weight wasn't coming off, this post would have been embarrassing to me. On the same token, if I were considered to be way too skinny but doing everything right, I would be upset too.my bookshelf!

lol. shut it preggo!
Well, starprincess beat me to it.
The point of my "do I look too thin" post is that I am a size that some of you have deemed as "too skinny" and I certainly do not look too thin. I was then going to go on this tirade about how size isn't what is important it is how healthy you are and just because someone is "skinny" doesn't mean they are healthy and use me as an example. I eat like a freaking pig, my only exercise is walking from my car to my office (which is a decent distance), walking back and forth from my boss' office to my office (which I do mucho), and sex. I can't even run around the block. Well, I could if someone were chasing me. Maybe.
Anyway, "overweight" people can be healthy just as "skinny" people can be unhealthy. Due to my fascination with gorging myself I am sure I will die at an early age but damn people at least I died well fed.
The end.
Thank you starprincess for taking the words out of my mouth.
Anytime chica, anytime.
