Sorry about the caps but I don't know how to pin this so it stays at the top for while. I think I need to be a mod or need the services of a mod to do that. I thought that the caps would bring attention to it.
So I created an elfster account at the suggestion of scottandsissy to help keep track of those who want to participate. I hope we get a good group going! There are instructions about signing up on the page. As far as I can tell you just write your email address and then when the deadline is up the program sends you an email with the email address of your buddy and then you can email them to get their mailing address. Here is the sign up link.

Re: OCTOBER 2009 ORNAMENT EXCHANGE
great idea to use elfster, I use it for christmas exchanges yearly...it's awesome!
I just signed up.
How will we know where to send the ornament? I didn't have to fill out my address anywhere...
I was thinking it might be fun if everyone send a Christmas ornament representative of where they're from. Example: If one of us lives in Paris, we would send an ornament with an Eifel Tower...or something equally parisian. I think it might be easier than getting an ornament to fit someone else's personality or life situation.
I'm open to anything... just thought I throw the idea out there.
I think this is a really great idea and definitely in the spirit of a cross-country ornament exchange!

Great idea. I just signed up.
I think something that represents the sender's city is a great idea!

1) I think what happens is once the draw deadline is up elfster sends all the people who have signed up a message containing the email of your "buddy" you then email each other your mailing address so as you both know where to send your goods but it's kept private from everyone else in the group.
2) I am into that suggestion as well although I have nothing very exciting about my city lol. However my province is pretty amazing.
My only issue so far is in me being from Canada it may be a bit more expensive for my buddy to ship me my ornament, conversly it will be more for me to send to America. That's not a problem to me and I hope it won't be an issue with my buddy....please please lol.
I'm glad it's generating interest! I hope that people continue to sign up!
I've been away from my computer this weekend because I went to help my parents get their house ready for the winter. I'll definitely join the exchange on elfster. One thing I would suggest is making sure everyone's profile on elfster has their nest name on it. My name is in my nest profile (Sissy), but I've added it to my profile just in case you don't recognize me.
Thanks again for organizing this. I, too, like the idea of having the ornament be somewhat representative of where we're from.
Oh, so it's not a surprise? Bummer! I was hoping I wouldn't know until I opened it.
I wouldn't say it should be exclusively "city," because not all of us live in metropolitan areas. I think there's some State appropriate things, too.
My only concern is for the San Fran girls and the St. Louis girls... what if they get each other? lol
Honestly, Witchys, I'm not too concerned about the extra shipping to Canada. The ornament will be lightweight and I don't think it would be a terrible expense.
I'm "Karen."
But I otherwise agree that it's a good idea.
I feel the same. Not a big deal!

Awesome! I'm Sally on the thing. I never even thought about putting on my nest name.
Karen: Maybe elfster hides the name on the email. I don't really know. It must do something or else it's not much of a "secret" santa...
You can edit your profile to add your address. The only thing is, if we leave the address section blank, then when you email the person asking for their address doesn't that give away the surprise and kind of defeat the purpose?
